13 Things I Bought for Less Than $50 After Moving Halfway Across the Country

Dwell’s shop editor Sam Daly relocated from her beloved Bay Area to Austin, Texas, this past year. Here’s what made her new space feel like home.

Last June, I packed lots of boxes and drove for two days with my partner from sunny California to even sunnier Texas. Now, after a year of slowly outfitting my new home, I’m here to wax poetic about the pieces that made me feel settled—and they’re all less than $50!

Given the chance, I will always choose a bowl instead of a plate—but with this, I really don’t have to. Full disclosure: I started my collection while still living in Berkeley, and am thankful that they arrived in one piece after mailing them. Durability!

East Fork Everyday Bowl
Perfect for tagliatelle with bolognese, a garden salad, potato and leek soup, a rice bowl—or about 3 and 1/2 cups to the brim.

Moving away from my family was very hard for me; I highly recommend absorbing cookbooks to get through tough times. I spent several weeks poring over all these incredible recipes, which you don’t need to be vegan to enjoy.

Vegan Japaneasy: Over 80 Delicious Plant-Based Japanese Recipes
Japanese cuisine: Fatty tuna! Wagyu beef! Pork broth! Fried chicken! Squid guts! It's a MINEFIELD for mindful vegans. OR SO IT SEEMS. In reality, there's an enormous amount of Japanese food that is inherently vegan or can be made vegan with just a few simple substitutions.

This sweet little vase is a classic for a reason.

Heath Ceramics Bud Vase
An Edith Heath classic, designed in the 1940s. Our Bud Vase makes for a stunning still life piece with or without flowers. Display it as a family, mixed and matched, or on its own—we’ll leave that up to you. At once versatile and understated, it's a beautiful addition to any room.

Some may say I have "too many" candles—as if that’s a thing. Please do yourself a favor and purchase a candle from Boy Smells; I've tried several scents and they’re all incredible. (I also finally bought a candle wick trimmer. Life changed.)

Boy Smells Cowboy Kush Candle
A richly scented, all-natural candle that's developed, mixed and hand poured in the founders' home in Los Angeles. Akin to having a smoke at a rousing rodeo, this tumbleweed of a scent is a dusty accumulation of suede and saffron, with puffs of pot leaf and patchouli floating through.
Boy Smells Hinoki Fantôme Candle
A richly scented, all-natural candle that's developed, mixed and hand poured in the founders' home in Los Angeles.  A resinous aroma of smoking Japanese cypress and jasmine petals. Warm and meditative, with an element of earthy spice notes and quiet, fresh moss.

Did you think I was joking about this candle thing? If fresh paint smells have you down, consider these candles from Yield—they last a loooong time, and once they become a sputtering puddle of wax and wick, the container is easy to clean and keep as a very cool drinking glass.

YIELD Wright Candle
This organic coconut-wax candle is inspired by by a selection of the brand's favorite 20th-century architects. Each candle distills distinct elements of place and environment into a balanced and modern scent.

Who would I be without mentioning these famous-on-TikTok crates? I have about six to store everything from cat toys to jewelry to sunscreen.

Hay Recycled Color Crate - Small
This multifunctional plastic crate features a ventilated and stackable design. Available in a variety of different colors and sizes for smart storage in small spaces.

Now, I haven’t bought these yet, but they’re on my wishlist! We had these at Dwell’s coworking space in San Francisco and they were quite sleek. Huge fan of everything Yamazaki.

Uchino Waffle Hand Towel
An intricate waffle-tiled hand towel is exceptionally thick and cushy to provide incredible absorption.

I brought a lot of unframed artwork with me. I like these frames from Frametory because they’re fairly inexpensive and come in a variety of sizes.
