Once home to a shoe repairer and abandoned for the last two years, Central Hotel & Café received a much-needed makeover from owner Leif Thingtved, who is seen here peering out the one-roomed hotel located above the downstairs café. Diana: London's Most Enduring Logo

Transit signage is an especially fascinating genre. The graphics have to relay loads of information to a great number of people. When done right, you don't "notice" the design, you just get from point A to point B hassle-free. So I really enjoyed the capsule history of London's Underground logo summarized in CoDesign: "The Roundel is neither picture nor typography. The Roundel is always instantly recognizable as itself in whatever context it is placed while simultaneously communicating the idea of transportation, urban cool, and serving as a visual metonym for London itself," writes Logo for London author David Lawrence. For more on transportation signage, view my story on New York's WalkNYC design by Pentagram.

Kelsey: Kim Thome

Our friends at Sight Unseen are the brave explorers of design's new world, particularly those working in the super-colorful, Memphis-inspired vein. This week Sight Unseen posted a look at Kim Thome's stripe-heavy exhibition at London's William Benington Gallery, and it's eye candy galore. Behold!

Olivia: Alessi Fiato Sul Collo Necklace

Ever since I popped into the Alessi store a couple of weeks ago, I've been infatuated with Mario Trimarchi's collar necklace. In Sicily, where Trimarchi grew up, a sirocco (warm Mediterranean wind) would occasionally blow through. According to local lore this wind was dangerous, so the neighbors would gather into a windowless room to smoke and play rounds of cards until it was over. When the door to the room was opened, the sirocco would rush in and cause the cards to scatter about, the effect of which Trimarchi captured in the stainless-steel Fiato Sul Collo.

Julia: Beautiful Fashion Illustrations by Dadu Shin

I recently stumbled across "I Don't Like Clothes", a personal project by New York City-based illustrator Dadu Shin. His unique designs caught my eye immediately. They are full of colors and interesting patterns, and I would truly love to wear any one of his pieces.

For this Swedish kitchen, an extra-thin slab of Carrara marble was used for the countertop and backsplash so that it would recede into the space, not overwhelm it. The room is also outfitted with IKEA cabinets painted a serene powder blue—adding a vintage vibe, and a high-low sense of style.

Karen White, David MacNaughtan, and their sons, Griffin and Finlay, hang out on the front deckof their narrow home in Toronto’s leafy Roncesvalles neighborhood. A narrow modernist composition of glass panes and purple brick, the house slips like a bookmark between two older buildings, a bright three-story abode on a lot narrower than most suburban driveways. A Lot for a Little

Regina and Andy Rihn weren’t exactly modernists when they first began their frustrating, unproductive slog through the pricey Austin, Texas, real estate market. “We just liked things that were old and wood,” Andy says. “That was our aesthetic.” But thankfully for them, the first-time homebuyers got lucky.

Rookie firm Patch Work Architecture used locally sourced Lawson cypress to clad the exterior of a 970-square-foot house in New Zealand. Vibrant painted accents contrast with the otherwise neutral structure. Steel trusses, painted in a blue hue called Lochmara from Resene, are visible through the fiberglass panels on the veranda. Sheets of unframed glass fill the spaces between the building’s operable windows and the sloping eave of the roof, giving the house, as architect Alan Organschi puts it, “the feel of coming apart at the seams—of surfaces unhinged.”

Stephen King was all I read in my youth and I'm a HUGE fan of horror movies. Musicals are ok, but a musical like this one..YES please! San Francisco's Ray of Light Theatre is presenting Carrie The Musical this fall at Victoria Theatre. I'm totally getting my prom dress out of storage…it's so ON!

Kelsey: Flatware Fiesta

If Mondo Blogo isn't on your design reading blog(o)roll, what are you waiting for? It's a treasure trove of archival design content, organized by (or rather, published at the whim of) Patrick Parrish, who started Mondo Cane gallery/store in New York in 1994. This post from way back tickles my fancy this week, as I just finished my own flatware hunt. These picks range from the flat and Bauahus-inspired to curvier, anthropomorphic, and Post Modern cutlery. It's enough to fuel your Ebay searches for decades.

Michelle Linden encountered a common real estate dilemma: a less than stellar home in a convenient and desirable neighborhood. Rather than scrap plans to be able to walk to the grocery store, live adjacent to a major bike route, and be close to friends, Linden decided to take on the fixer-uper.

When the Zimmerman family settled in Seattle, Washington, in the late 1990s they bought a 1,100-square-foot Craftsman built in the 1920s. Fast-forward to today. Not wanting to leave their beloved neighborhood, but hurting for space, they enlisted the help of local design-build firm Ninebark to create a separate living area. Working from sketches that the residents had from their uncle, Gary Schoemaker, an architect in New York, Ninebark realized a refined structure that serves as a playroom, office, and guesthouse for visitors, complete with a kitchenette and full bathroom.
