Embracing the nuances of the typical Victorian vernacular, while weaving in plenty of clean, contemporary design elements, London–based studio Mustard Architects worked closely with the owner of the homeware and clothing brand The Small Home to reinvent her family’s Brixton home.

After a thoughtful renovation, the updated 1,485-square-foot-home—aptly named The Curated Home—now serves as a comfortable, modern family residence, as well as a functioning workspace for the team behind The Small Home. Scroll ahead for a peek inside.

A bench in the dining area extends out towards the garden, and mirrors the brick seating outdoors to allow for easy social interactions between users indoors and out.

“Although functional, our clients wanted to address the low levels of natural light and restricted space in their existing home to allow for family/social living, larger gatherings, and to accommodate an expanding home run business,” says Joanna Coleman, a director of the firm.

“Rhythms of existing timber paneling, brickwork, and decorative colors carry through, defining the new kitchen/dining space whilst concealing more modern appliances, storage, and conveniences,” says the studio’s other director, John Norman.

By retaining the property's Victorian details and combining them with a more streamlined, modern design, the architects managed to open up the layout and create a series of natural extensions within the site.

Traditional timber-boarding and exposed painted bricks line the walls of the loft to create a bright home office.

“The project complements period and modern design, fulfilling our clients’ ambitions of simplicity, usefulness, and beauty,” says Coleman.
