When a couple purchased a dark and dated Eichler in the heart of Silicon Valley, they saw potential—but they knew that a complete overhaul would be needed to make the space work for them. The circa-1958 home was loaded with charming original details, but starved of natural light and chopped up in a way that limited function.

The young couple, who both work in tech, sought to incorporate a dedicated office space into the revamped four-bedroom, two-bathroom home, as well as a brighter, more open living room that would seamlessly connect to the outdoors. To achieve these design goals while staying true to the Eichler aesthetic, the couple turned to Klopf Architecture to reimagine the property.

The home suffered from a choppy layout, which made it feel much smaller than its 1,722 square feet. A main objective of the remodel would be to remove the artificial dividers that broke up the public space, and create a more open “great room.”

Klopf Architecture also relocated the galley kitchen, which was sandwiched in the middle of the home’s main living space. The kitchen’s new location would benefit from clear sight lines through the home to both the rear yard and side patio, maximizing the feeling of openness.

A small, 72-square-foot addition at the front of the home blends in nearly undetectably with the existing architecture. The added space strategically allows more breathing room in the private wing of the home, notably in the master and hall bathrooms.

The Klopf Architecture team, together with Coast to Coast Construction, took great care in preserving and restoring the home's midcentury architectural elements. The team carefully sanded and refinished the tongue-and-groove ceiling, which had been painted. The renovation also preserved the home’s exterior wood siding, and matched it at the new addition. The team retained the glass wall at the rear of the home, an Eichler signature, while upgrading the glazing to energy-efficient Fleetwood products with thermally broken aluminum frames. They also preserved the side window wall, while replacing some of the fixed glass with operable doors.

A newly landscaped rear patio provides a valuable extension to the home’s compact and efficient footprint. Honoring period Eichler details while adapting to fit a modern lifestyle, the revitalized home is now a place for the owners to feel relaxed, comfortable, and centered.
