Herman Miller Eames Aluminum Group Chair, Management

The Eames Aluminum Group Collection (1958) began as a special project for Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard, who needed seating for a home they were designing for industrialist J. Irwin Miller in Columbus, Indiana. The pair asked the Eameses to design light and mobile leisure chairs. At the time, the duo were exploring ways to use aluminum, which had been strengthened, refined, and made more affordable since WWII. So, they constructed a lightweight, die-cast aluminum frame and set a sling in it—a “sitting pocket,” as they called it, which subtly conformed to the body’s shape. This completely new type of seat marked a departure from the idea of a chair as solid shell.

Herman Miller Eames Task Side Chair

Providing just the right amount of give, this authentic height-adjustable, swiveling Eames Task Shell Chair has a deep seat pocket and waterfall seat edge to reduce pressure on the backs of thighs. It's crafted, in the U.S.A., to last. Charles and Ray Eames believed that “design is a method of action,” and they continually updated their work to suit changing needs and solve new problems. In 1948, they entered a prototype chair in MoMA’s International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design, which led to the launch of their Molded Shell dining chair collection in 1950. Three years later, they expanded it to include the Eames Task Chair (1953), first mounted on a four-star base but now available on a five-star base for markedly better stability. “The chair that Charles and Ray were designing,” explains grandson Eames Demetrios, “is the chair that’s made tomorrow.” This is the authentic Eames Task Chair by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A.
