Bantam 73" Sofa

A DWR best-seller for over a decade, the Bantam Collection (2004) celebrates the soft, less-machined brand of modernism that arose in the United States in the 1930s. Delivering physical comfort as well as aesthetic pleasure, the entire frame is lightly padded and finely upholstered with a fitted back and a single row of button tufting. Matching piping along the seams reinforces the clean lines of Bantam’s frame. Tapered solid wood legs lend visual lightness. Made in U.S.A. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach

Gabriel Tan Port Coffee Table

While serving in the Singaporean Navy, Gabriel Tan became aware that such a thing as industrial design existed, and a floodgate opened. He soon earned a design degree from the National University of Singapore and went on to open his own studio with an international reach. But Tan never forgot his days aboard ship, and when it came time to design the Port Table (2017), he drew inspiration from a common feature of ships: the porthole, with its stout frame surrounding a pane of circular glass. The design was an attempt to rethink marble and glass coffee tables with vulnerable exposed edges. “In the same way a porthole frame protects,” Tan explains, “the round wooden frame of the Port Table protects the edges of the stone or glass from chipping and protects people from sharp edges.” Likewise, he says, “The three fin-like legs have soft edges, too, which are easy on legs and also beautifully sculptural.” Made in Malaysia. HAY Mags Soft Low Sofa

Delivering maximum comfort with minimum details, the Mags Soft Low Collection (2007) by HAY began with the idea that a sofa must have a simple look because it’s so dominant in a room. With that in mind, it was designed as a low, deep, welcoming space in which to stretch out and lounge. This collection features solid construction and plush foam cushions to ensure lasting comfort, with rounded edges to keep the aesthetic casual. Made in China.

Offi Mag Table

The multifunctional Mag Table (1999) serves as a table or stool that holds magazines in its “elbow.” And that’s not all this hybrid furniture form can do – position it vertically, so it’s standing on its narrow end, and it works as a laptop stand you can use when you’re seated. A continuous sheet of molded birch plywood forms this bentwood table. The wood veneer or white laminate surface is durable and easy to maintain. The Mag Table offers an inexpensive yet distinctive solution for home or office; use it next to a bed or sofa, or as a compact workstation for computing. Made in Latvia. Jonas Wagell Jonas Armchair

Having worked in the fields of graphic design and project management and studying in his native Sweden and the United States, Jonas Wagell is a well-rounded designer and architect. His Mini House, a 160-square-foot prefab structure, earned him attention in 2008 as one of the world’s 50 hottest young architects. Working out of a studio in the Södermalm district of Stockholm (which Vogue called the coolest neighborhood in Europe), Wagell calls his approach “generous minimalism.” For the Jonas Collection (2016), he sought to create a piece that could be enjoyed every day – “a hub in the house that people would gather round to socialize and talk.” To encourage that, Wagell prudently specified cushions with feather fill and eased edges, arms with a gentle arc and legs slender and tall. “I try to create objects detached from immediate trends,” he says, “products that I can be proud of and that can be justified and appreciated for years to come.” Made in Canada.

Softline Noomi Chair

In creating her Noomi Swivel Chair (2013), Susanne Grønlund didn’t want to design just another attractive piece, so she thought at length about functionality. Yes, everyone wants to sit comfortably, but maybe you also want to turn and speak to the person next to you or turn away from a distraction for some privacy. In other words, why just sit when you can swivel? Simple, elegant, and understated, Noomi stands on a smooth-moving – and soothing – 360-degree swivel base. Made in Denmark.

Jens Risom Bench

Running into legendary designer Jens Risom in the halls at DWR headquarters was one of the many pleasures of working here. Over the years, we collaborated with Risom on a number of product launches. The Jens Bench (2008) came about when we worked with him to re-launch his Chair and Ottoman, originally designed in 1949 for the Caribe Hilton Hotel in Puerto Rico. Decades had passed since this collection was in production, and Risom worked closely with us on every step of its return, from reviewing prototypes, to adjusting tiny details, to advocating cost-effective changes in the manufacturing process. Like all the furniture by this iconic designer, this collection has a subtle Scandinavian sensibility that works with modern and traditional settings. Or, as Risom put it, “Good design means that anything good will go well with other equally good things.” Made in U.S.A.

Design Within Reach Lína Swivel Chair

“I think ‘flow’ is a good word for it,” says designer Hlynur Atlason when asked to describe his Lína Swivel Chair (2018) in one word. “Because of the way the shapes come together as one, and how they play off each other.” Born in Iceland, Hlynur studied at Parsons in New York, where he continues to live today. From his SoHo office, he’s designed furniture, products and packaging for Ercol, Stella Artois, Billie, L’Oréal and, of course, Design Within Reach. The Lína Swivel Chair began with his desire to create a chair as one solid form. The result is both clean and complex, with no straight lines, and curves that are continuously changing trajectory. “It’s a sculpted shape that one can enjoy examining,” he says. Icelandic for “line,” Lína “embraces you with all the softness on the inside.” Made in Italy.

Objekto Paulistano Armchair

Originally designed for the Paulistano Athletic Club in São Paulo, Brazil, the Paulistano Armchair’s frame is a continuous 17-foot-long piece of solid steel that’s welded in a single spot and hand-machine polished. This deceptively simple structure is then wrapped in almost an entire hide of leather that develops a patina over time. Exceptionally comfortable, the Paulistano flexes slightly, and the sling can be adjusted up or down the frame for upright or relaxed sitting. Made in France.
