  • American Design Club
    @amdc
    The American Design Club—AmDC—was conceived in the spring of 2008. At the time, American relevance in design was in question, and many postulated that US designers would never be as prominent or prolific as European designers. The founders saw that there was plenty of talent and ambition within American designers, but what was ultimately missing was a way for designers to share their work with a broad audience. The AmDC founding members created a platform where designers could launch new ideas and connect with each other. The AmDC began as a community that was submission-based, in which the strongest pieces would be displayed. This method enabled the AmDC to create shows that granted exposure to new designers.

    The summer I purchased this gorgeous wooded lot, my niece and I camped out here so I could seek inspiration for the design of a house to build on it. One afternoon, the man who sold me the property gave us a turkey caller he had made. We decided to have an impromptu campfire sing along with this small device for accompaniment. In seconds, we had cause to pause as we heard real turkeys excitedly gobbling their way up the hill to meet us. "What magic is this?" we city girls wondered. But we would soon come to discover that it was perfectly normal life in this enchanted, happy wood. All summer, we listened to great horned owls hoot by night, and we watched ravens and hawks battle for the sky by day. We learned that deer are fans of acoustic guitar and that delicious wild wine berries grow in the sunny patch up by the road. We explored each tiny cave and outcropping. We cracked jokes while we cleared trails and skipped rocks or hunted for old moonshining relics down by the stream. In short, we really lived. I knew then that the home I designed would have to keep me connected to the magical spirit of the nature all around me. (Bug-free and with infinite hot water, of course!) This is where my imagination led me. My hope is that it may provide a constant source of wonder, inspiration, and renewal for all those who dwell here. Happily ever after, Vanessa.

    We are a boutique architecture firm located in Austin, TX. Our work is refined, crafted with pride, and deceptively uncomplicated. Our spaces are beautiful and practical, and they reveal themselves slowly. Our work does not cry for attention, but instead speaks softly through a design language that strikes a balance between the familiar and what is new. We strive to find harmony and connectivity between the interior and exterior of the building and its environment. We are influenced by the traditions of modern design, but our work always begins with an analysis of the unique characteristics of the site and the needs of our clients. We work with clients on all types of designs and budgets. Our success relies on our belief that effective designs are achieved through collaboration, respect and hard work.
