    Herbert Krenchel graduated with a Master of Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark. Herbert Krenchel’s research was focused on materials and fiber reinforcement. Since the 1950’s, Herbert Krenchel has worked simultaneously with his research and design. The enameled Krenit bowl won the gold medal at the 1954 Milan Triennale.

    Sori Yanagi's designs can be found today in permanent exhibitions around the world, from MoMA in New York to the Louvre in Paris. Still productive at an age when most have long retired, Yanagi (1915-) has created furniture, porcelain objects, kitchen utensils and cars. He apprenticed with Charlotte Perriand, who at the time was in Tokyo as an arts and crafts consultant to the Japanese Board of Trade. One his best-known designs, the 1954 Butterfly stool, catapulted him into the canon of postwar modernist furniture designers.

From 1979 to 1991, he held teaching and research at the Faculty of Architecture in Florence. As an industrial and interior designer and architect, Giovannoni specializes in plastic products. He has worked with companies such as Alessi, Fiat, Hannspree, Hanssem, Helit, Honeywell, Laufen, L 'Oreal, Magis, Maletti, Better, Moooi, Nissan, Promelit, Pulsar, Samsung, Seiko, Siemens, Skitsch, Sodastream, Toto, and more.

    William Krisel, AIA, principal of the firm of Palmer & Krisel (formed with Partner Dan Palmer), was born in 1924 in Shanghai of American parents working overseas for the U.S. State Department. Krisel lived in China until age 13, when his family returned to the US, where he attended Beverly Hills High. During World War II, Krisel was assigned to General Joe Stilwell as a Chinese interpreter. He attended USC for his degree in architecture. Krisel has also been a licensed landscape architect since 1954.

    Born in 1919 and raised in Copenhagen, Denmark, Jens Quistgaard forged metal on his own anvil at age 14 and exhibited self-designed sets of knives a year later. In fact, it was Quistgaard’s work on display at a knife exhibition in Copenhagen in 1950 that caught the eye of American entrepreneur Ted Nierenberg. Quistgaard had the artistic vision to take everyday household tools and make them beautiful, and Nierenberg had the know-how to make beautiful tools available to the everyday buyer. Together they formed Dansk, a flatware and cookware company, in 1954.

    Göran Hongell was born in Helsinki, Finland in 1902. The artist and glass designer was one of the pioneers of Finnish glass tradition. Back in the 1930s, Hongell presented a first version of what would become his most famous creation, the handblown glass series Aarne. In 1954, he won the gold medal at the Triennale in Milan with Aarne. The Aarne glass series is produced by Iittala.

    Gino Sarfatti was born in Venice in 1912 and studied aeronaval engineering at the University of Genoa. From 1939 onwards he worked in the lighting sector and set up Arteluce which soon became a national and international reference point for the modern architecture movement in lighting. During his thirty years of activity, Gino Sarfatti designed and produced over 400 luminaires and carried out non-stop research into innovation as regards typology, materials, production technologies, light sources, technical lighting effects and design aspects. In the course of their work, Gino Sarfatti and Arteluce won numerous prizes and awards including the Compasso d'Oro in 1954 and 1955, and the Honorary Diploma of the Milan Triennale. Arteluce was also a meeting place and an important forum for many of the leading Italian designers in the 50s and 60s. Gino Sarfatti died at Gravedona in 1984.

    Korab was born in 1926 in Budapest, Hungary. As a young man, his studies of architecture at the Polytechnicum were interrupted in 1949 by the necessity to escape his country’s communist regime. In a prevailing trend of overseas emigration he opted for France, where in Paris he attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts obtaining his diploma of architecture in 1954. During this time, Korab worked throughout Europe as a journeyman with notable architects, including Le Corbusier. Coming to the United States in 1955, Korab was hired by Eero Saarinen where he began experimenting with the use of photography as part of the design development process. In 1956 he was awarded fourth place in the international design competition for the Sydney Opera House, and in 1958, invited by Frank Lloyd Wright to join Taliesin as both an architect and photographer. In 1964 Korab received the prestigious AIA Medal for Architectural Photography, recognizing his worldwide coverage of prominent architects. By now photography of architecture was his main occupation. In 1994, President Clinton offered a portfolio of Korab’s photographs as a state gift to Arpad Goncz, the president of Hungary. Korab currently lives in Troy, Michigan with his wife Monica.
