“For this project, [design director] Kyle [Blue] already had the architectural references for me, so to start, I asked an array of questions: What type of feel do you want? What’s the most important message to convey? What do we need to tell readers with the picture?” Gardner says. “He explained that the illustration needed to bring the structure into the environment and we kicked around ideas about putting a courtyard underneath and having people milling around. We went through two or three different variations.”

"If there are two people buying the home, write your answers down separately, starting with your absolute must-haves," Hoffman explains. “Putting together a list separately can give both parties and the realtor a clear picture of what the perfect home will have for both of you."

When Rob and Mary Lubera started pulling threads to uncover the origins of their new home—the lone midcentury house amid rows of Tudor Revivals in suburban Detroit—not even architecture scholars could have anticipated what they would find. Theirs is the last surviving residence by Alexander Girard (1907–1993), a modernist visionary who made his name in textiles but tried his hand at virtually everything, architecture included. The shoji-like laminate screens, seen in the entryway, are characteristic of his Japanese-influenced work.

“We wanted something cozy with nooks, where you can be aware of what’s going on elsewhere,” says Isabel of the floor-to-ceiling shelving units. “They separate the environment, and cut the light a bit, but you can still see what’s happening in other spaces,” adds Matías.

“Beyond the age of information is the age of choices.” Says Demetrios of this quote, “Charles said this at the Aspen Design Conference in 1971, and that is exactly where we are today. When you think about it, the problem is not information, the problem is analyzing it, figuring out how to make sense of it and doing the appropriate thing with it. That’s the thinking that to me is so powerful.”
