Herzog + de Meuron used a variety of industrial materials throughout Dominus Estate. After ascending the stairwell to the second level, one is met by brutalist, concrete floors, a wire-mesh ceiling, floor-to-ceiling glass, and sunlight that shines through the gabions. A varnished-wood handrail contrasts with the metal, stone, and glass, adding warmth to the otherwise cool setting.

At the time of the opening of United Artists Theatre in New York, its owners proclaimed this building "the most beautiful, comfortable and up-to-date theatre in the world." As part of a United Artists Theatre series of buildings in Detroit, L.A., and New York, the idea was based a ‘movie palace’—a huge, all-encompassing destination where movies, recording studios, theater, and symphony performances, could all intermingle inside dazzling interiors.

Jongerius also touched upon the importance of a designer having an aesthetic signature. She used the dots that appear throughout her creations as an example. “It’s a magnificent moment to see an object have an independent life.” Here we see the massive Knots & Beads Curtain, created with hand-knotted yarn and 30,000 porcelain beds made from Dutch clay by Royal Tichelaar Makkum, that appears in the new interior for the United Nations North Delegates’ Lounge in New York, 2013. Jongerius worked alongside Rem Koolhaas, Irma Boom, Gabriel Lester and Louise Schouwenberg on various aspects of the space.

"Architecturally, it's a fabulous room," says Michael Adlerstein, an architect and the assistant secretery general in charge of the renovation. "When you walk in, it's awe-inspiring. It is a very powerful room of dignity and discipline, and the things that are needed in order to have a coherent discussion."

New floor vents offer a subtle hint at the extensive work that was done to modernize the heating and air-conditioning systems, which were moved beneath the floorboards. The blue chairs, which are reserved for ambassadors' aides, and the red chairs—all of which are original—were outfitted with fresh Naugahyde upholstery.
