Currently taking submissions, the competition will task architects and designers with consulting the floor plan of a destitute house in Memphis, Tennessee, and turning it into a functional, affordable, and livable home that will end up in the hands of a deserving family. The hope is that it will be a place where they can grow and thrive for years to come.

The collaborative submission from Sylvain Martet and Mathieu Lambert is an ongoing project called Striplands. "…post-modern architecture allows unnatural couplings between the old and the recent…Logos now replace gods, the magnificent becomes a model, and the best holiday pictures are taken in creepy diner parking lots."

"i.ce. c.u.b.e.," Pill-Maharam Architects

Defined by large windows made of tempered glass with one-way film, architect David Pill's submission quite literally reflects on winter. He explains that winter's ephemerality, in terms of both seasonal and long-term climate change, motivated him.

One of the more sculptural submissions, “Tetras” is a design inspired by traditional Middle-Eastern tile art. An open-air pavilion and multi-use outdoor plaza would be constructed out of colorful, tetrahedral building blocks, which would harness energy through a combination of transparent, translucent, and opaque solar cells.

"Relevant, beautiful, perhaps inspired would be the right word" was how one judge described Saarinen’s winning submission in 1948 to build the centerpiece of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, the St. Louis Arch. Standing as the nation’s tallest man-made monument, the 630-foot-high curve of concrete and stainless steel stands as a focal point of the St. Louis riverfront and poignant symbol of national confidence and innovation. Both Eero and his father submitted designs, and a mix-up meant the family temporarily thought the elder Eliel had won.

Winning a third place mention from the jury, “Solaris” represents one of the more pragmatic design entries. Acting as a sort of solar canopy, this renewable energy structure was developed in collaboration with Livermore, California-based solar technology compnay Cool Earth. Unlike the more conceptual submissions, “Solaris” is based on existing technologies, so in theory, it’s ready to be built and generate enough energy to power the country of Chad per year.

Designed by Lord & Plumb, the Bentley Longhouse is an example of car lovers willing to spend more than an extra buck or two to ensure that their favorite set of wheels never leaves their sight. A growing trend in modern garage or parking space designs for homes is to pretty much bring the car into the lifestyle and turn it into not just transportation, but also a statement of ones style. The Longhouse design features a car collectors display garage, in addition to a flanking 3 car garage for daily parking and storage needs. Follow us during construction. Interviews and material submissions are welcome. Building plans are available for purchase.

Though the Swamp Hut has only seen two New England winters so far, its plans have seen over 20. The project started two decades as the design for a retreat for Moskow's father-in-law, who lived in the Midwest and always dreamed of a small structure floating over the fields. It was never realized over amber waves of grain but has been in and out of the architect's drawing drawers in the years between its inception and realization--as an Architecture for Humanity competition entry, disaster housing proposal, eco-resort lodging plan, and as an all too appropriate submission to the Boston Society of Architects Unbuilt Architecture Awards.

Sheep skin stools by Gerður Guðmundsdóttir-A graduate from IADT Tampa, Guðmunsdóttir pays homage to Mies van der Rohe but creates pieces that are distinctly Icelandic. For her DesignMarch submissions, she accepted a challenge from her uncle to work with Icelandic sheep skin, famous for its long outer coat. The result, a bench and a set of stools showing the versatility of the material. "I love the raw and wildness of the natural uncut sheepskin,” Guðmunsdóttir told me. “I made a bench using that, and went the opposite direction for a completely different but complimentary look for the stools with cut sheepskin." Gravity Stool by Jólan van der Wiel received the BIO 23 student work award. The look of this wind-swept seating design was created by combining iron filings, resin, and the power of magnetism. A much talked about submission in the "machines and processes" category, Gravity Stool was created under the supervision of Bas van Beek at Gerrit Rietveld Academie/DesignLab, Amsterdam, The Netherlands in 2011.

"The almost freakish positioning of the magnetic fields in the mold machine largely determines the final shape of the stool. It is the combination of the magnet machine with the plastic material (developed specifically for this purpose) that enabled the designer to start a small but efficient chain of production."
