For this kitchen, the architects paired slate-gray HPL (high-pressure laminate) cabinets by Henrybuilt, cool Basaltina countertops, with custom shelving and a white Corian backsplash.

Although John and Debby’s art collection fills much of their house, pieces such as these by Matias Faldbakken, Aaron Boone, and William O’Brien particularly shine in the curved gallery hallway, which was purpose-built for art.

The kitchen is enclosed by windows, which gives the home a strong indoor/outdoor connection.

The design team reduced the size of the garage to allow for a larger kitchen.

The entrance of the home features slate flagstone flooring and midcentury furniture.

The bedroom’s vertical, floor-to-ceiling window lets occupants admire the graceful trees outside. A Mini Tolomeo lamp by Artemide sits on the bedside table.

The original ensuite featured an awkward triangular shower, and was, as Daniel recalls, “the size of a closet. It looked like a powder room.” Clever use of millwork redirected the light from the skylight away from the bedroom and into the bathroom.

The cabin's cozy interior contains benches, tables, and a fireplace for travelers to warm up and recharge. The picture window frames panoramic views of the valley below.

Ikea Pax cupboards are banked in the entryway, with birch-panel doors. A carpenter friend made the bench in the entryway; another friend painted it. Dark slate flooring in the entryway gives way to maple in the rest of the home, a beautiful contrast of materials.

The buildings were constructed with glulam columns and beams.

Expansive windows and skylights usher incredible amounts of natural light into the residence.

“From the slate floors to the stone countertops, to the wood, brick, steel, and glass—all of it felt like something I wanted to celebrate,” says Derek.

The palette is understated throughout the house, including the kitchen, where stools define an intimate nook.

A partition wraps the stairway from the basement to the third-floor master suite. Its form was inspired by the way light filters through the trees in the forest.

The red glass started as an “idea from the client that grew into this thing that was more powerful than we ever thought,” Faulkner says.

The sunken lounge was designed with "slowing down and appreciating the environment" in mind. A custom-made, built-in sofa wraps around the space, bleeding into the stairs and a custom wood display shelf. Not having a TV was an intentional choice. "We wanted the client to be able to lie back and watch the clouds and the sky, to have conversations, to read a book, to play with their pets," says Knights.

The extensive use of glazing on the first floor of the home allows light to enter, and also creates a strong sense of the surrounding nature preserve inside the living space.

The spaces are simple, and zones are articulated by level changes in the floor and ceilings.

Maximizing daylight is only one of the sustainable design strategies used in the Low/Rise residence.

Bryan painted the metal band that runs around the top of each staircase Space Black by Benjamin Moore to match the treads.

Locally sourced Italian slate covers the ground floor rooms; the coat rack near the entrance is from Zanotta.

Glass and open spaces keep the interiors bright and airy.

The entryway of Quarry Bay Residence greets visitors with a full-height oak slat shoe closet with a cutout finished in brass. Lim + Lu took great care to ensure that the interior of the apartment has sweeping views from one room to another.

A hallway leads to the family's private space.

On the lower level, stone flooring and superinsulated walls help regulate temperature and reduce energy needs.

"Who said accessibility needs to be dorky? Handicap folks spend a considerable amount of time at home, and often the stigma is that their homes can't be beautiful. We would love to change that!" says LeAnne.

The slate entry features privacy glass.

Even from the bathtub there are unobstructed views and connection to the lake right outside the windows.
