2006: Rem Koolhaas and Cecil Balmond, with Arup This massive, egg-shaped orb, like a blimp about to achieve flight, lit up Kensington Park during the summer of 2006, with a roof that literally floated free of the main structure. This majestic and modern Qatar National Library has sides that lift at the edges to form a diamond-shaped profile, and an interior that’s arranged around three aisles of book shelves that enclose a central, triangular space. “The idea was to make reading as accessible and as stimulating as possible to the population of Qatar,” says architect Rem Koolhaas. “We thought we could achieve that by creating a building that was almost a single room.”

Paper Punk, led by Grace Hawthorne, won best Modern Family exhibitor.

Southern California-based brand Cerno won best Lighting exhibitor.

Arpa, which designs and manufactures Fenix nanotechnology-matte laminate material—distributed by Willis—won the award for best Design Materials.

Rem rounds out the trio with his entryway, Blackbox, and Samsung Child Education and Culture Center. The long banks of glass windows are by far the most inviting of the three buildings, though the rougher, more industrial interiors offer a nice break with the pristine gallery space.

Indoor/outdoor living is sweet at Casa A by REM'A Arquitectos: residents can easily step from the sleek concrete interiors to enjoy the pool and backyard area, which are framed by hillside views.

From the Central Pavilion: The winner of the Silver Lion, this installation features large scale models of the Paulo Mendes da Rocha’s Serra Dourada Stadium in Brazil and Grafton Architects’ UTEC university campus in Lima. The influence that the Brazilian Pritzker prize has had on the Irish architects is revealed by the researched subjects as “built geography," “abstracted landscape," “landscape and infrastructure,” and “the horizon and the human being” (suggestive of a comparison of the landscapes of Machu Picchu in Peru and Skellig Michael off the west coast of Ireland). It also explores the possibilities of the ‘Free Section’ as a representation and work resource for big scale projects that encourage fluid, generous, open, and massive spaces.

Seattlites undoubtedly will want to bask in the golden glow of their public library even when they've returned all their books. Rem Koolhaas's building is done real justice by Publique Living's print.

The CCTV tower designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas was meant to be the headquarters for China Central Television when builders broke ground in 2004, but it was only over the past year that CCTV staff started moving into the building in significant numbers.
