“We always joke that we will establish a religion, but we are not super-weird people or intellectuals. We are boring couples with kids who were open to something different,

Here Sundari puts a bit of food together in the kitchen. A gas-fired grill and concrete countertop give the place a rough-hewn feel, and certainly evokes architect Ahmad Juhara's rally cray, "Ad hocism is my religion."

Coolcapitals Skyline

Submitted by Diane Lee

Designer's Statement:

"Each of the 5 cities have such unique and rich cultural histories. I was inspired to create a "CoolCapitals Skyline" consisting of famous buildings from each capital. I carefully chose buildings that represent not only the city's architecture but also its history, arts, music and religion: Rijksmuseum--Amsterdam, The Grote Markt--Antwerp, Escola Pia--Valencia, Burgtheater--Vienna, Fraumünster--Zürich. The skyline of these beautiful and historic buildings are contrasted with simple, clean lines and text. My goal was to convey a complementary combination of old world and modern design elements."

The Benesse Art Site Naoshima, located on Japan's Naoshima island, was concevied in 1985 thanks to a collaboration between a wealthy businessman and local mayor. Benesse - combining Latin's words for "well" and "being" - describes the site's complex aim of promoting connections among art, religion, nature, and education.

Among the site's holdings are the Benesse House (above) and the Chichu Art Museum (two slides ahead), both of which were designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando. His iconic use of concrete is in full view at the Benesse House Musuem (completed 1992) which holds numerous artworks.

The Great Ballcourt of Chichen Itza

The Great Ballcourt of Chichen Itza measures 545 feet long and 225 feet wide, and ranks as the largest of its kind ever discovered in Mesoamerica. The exact rules of the game played here, and whether it featured ceremonial aspects linked to Mayan religion, remain a mystery. Carved panels at the site indicate that players wore protective padding and were divided into two teams of 11 or 12, plus a captain.Just like the Colosseum, this was one place where it behooved you to be the victor: A central panel at the site portrays what appears to be the winning team’s captain beheading the losing captain. Located in Bhutan’s Bumthang District, Ogyen Choling dates back more than 650 years, serving first as a gompa (monastery), then as a dzong (administrative fortress that houses a local lord and family), and as a nagtshang (manor house) for centuries after. Many of the original structures were leveled in a June 1897 earthquake but were rebuilt to their present state in the years following. Bhutanese author Kunzang Choden, pictured here, marks the 20th generation of her family to live on the estate and care for its heritage; it was passed to her by her father, the complex’s prior landlord. She returned to Bhutan permanently in 1996 after yearslong stints in India, Nebraska, the Philippines, and Laos, starting in the ’60s. The mural behind her in the two-story tsug lhakhang (temple) is one of the manor’s many dedicated to figures like Shakyamuni Buddha, the founder of Buddhism; Guru Rinpoche, the Buddhist master credited with bringing the religion to Bhutan; Dorji Lingpa, the ancient religious leader of Ogyen Choling; and Gonpo Maning, a local protective Buddhist deity.
