The butler’s pantry is a transitional space between the kitchen and the formal dining room, "a shift," as Suzanne calls it. To denote this, cabinets were painted in Farrow & Ball’s Charleston Gray, while the countertop and backsplash are a 3cm "Prada Suede" quartzite, chosen for its striking veining.

After being recovered from its fair share of vandalism, Prada Marfa has become a permanent part of the Texas landscape. Though the structure lacks a real door, the two large windows are filled with actual shoes and bags by Prada.

On my way out of town, I stopped along the side of an empty highway to shoot the Prada Marfa, a permanent installation created by Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset in 2005. Standing alone in the middle of nowhere, the locked building holds actual Prada merchandise (right-foot-only shoes and handbags without bottoms, to deter vandalism and theft) and is constructed of adobe and MDF. I thought the intentional juxtaposition of tongue-in-cheek high-end design against the backdrop of the west Texas desert expanse was a fitting end to my time in Marfa. Truly a most unusual place.

When Rob and Mary Lubera started pulling threads to uncover the origins of their new home—the lone midcentury house amid rows of Tudor Revivals in suburban Detroit—not even architecture scholars could have anticipated what they would find. Theirs is the last surviving residence by Alexander Girard (1907–1993), a modernist visionary who made his name in textiles but tried his hand at virtually everything, architecture included. The shoji-like laminate screens, seen in the entryway, are characteristic of his Japanese-influenced work.
