Instead of giving something tangible to someone who has it all, consider giving to someone who has very little. Many non-profit organizations sponsor gift drives, including the UK-based Good Gifts. One effort we particularly like is a funding initiative for subsistence farming in Rwanda. 20x10 foot greenhouse for growing hydroponic food in Rwanda, £1,200 at Good Gifts.

Sunnylands, the Annenberg estate, was designed by A. Quincy Jones and Frederick Emmons for Walter and Leonore Annenberg—who were major influencers in their time. Friends with presidents, royalty, and more, Annenberg was heir to his father's publishing business, served as U.S. Ambassador to the UK, and later became famous along with his wife for their philanthropy.

Beetle 02 print by Note Design Studio for Paper Collective, $62 at paper-collective.com

Following in the wake of Warby Parker, a business model that pairs philanthropy with e-commerce, there's no reason you're gift-giving this season shouldn't give back. Paper Collective, an art print purveyor from Copenhagen, contributes proceeds from every poster sold to the designer's charity of choice. The Stockholm design studio has created a series of overprinted posters with slight color field mismatches; the benefits go to Greenpeace.
