After being recovered from its fair share of vandalism, Prada Marfa has become a permanent part of the Texas landscape. Though the structure lacks a real door, the two large windows are filled with actual shoes and bags by Prada.

WALL DECALS FROM BLIK

Little adds a bit of visual spice to the walls like a pop of color. Wallpaper is a fine bet, and the growing glut of the stuff should make it easy enough to separate the wheat from the chaff. Wall decals have also had something of a vogue, and in that vein we turn to the 2x4 collection for Blik. A handful of new designs by 2x4, a firm of identity designers who have worked for MTV, Prada, and other "seems-I've-heard-of-them" brands, are certainly worth a look. In fact they defy you not to notice them.

The butler’s pantry is a transitional space between the kitchen and the formal dining room, "a shift," as Suzanne calls it. To denote this, cabinets were painted in Farrow & Ball’s Charleston Gray, while the countertop and backsplash are a 3cm "Prada Suede" quartzite, chosen for its striking veining.

On my way out of town, I stopped along the side of an empty highway to shoot the Prada Marfa, a permanent installation created by Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset in 2005. Standing alone in the middle of nowhere, the locked building holds actual Prada merchandise (right-foot-only shoes and handbags without bottoms, to deter vandalism and theft) and is constructed of adobe and MDF. I thought the intentional juxtaposition of tongue-in-cheek high-end design against the backdrop of the west Texas desert expanse was a fitting end to my time in Marfa. Truly a most unusual place.

Morrison claims the padding of his girlfriend’s Prada loafers inspired the design of this chair, which is now in the Tate Modern. The tubular steel base supports an upholstered polyurethane foam back that can covered in a variety of fabrics and colors.

Hotel Jules is located in a limestone building that dates from 1860. The exterior is painted a glossy blue-black color—a custom hue that Auer says was inspired by his favorite Prada shirt. The classic rattan bistro tables and chairs are from the local company Drucker, the oldest rattan chair manufacturer in the world, founded in 1885.

Casting various forms with the help of balloons (and then popping them afterwards) has become a fun whimsy for designers. Arguably seen first at the Sponge Wall at the Prada store in Beverly Hills in 2004, designed by OMA, this technique has been repeated with numerous materials. Here, we see Rich Gilbert's SuperFoam Chair cast with a liquid foam into a mold of balloons inside a wooden cube formwork. (Also documented extensively via video.)
