Marine Stadium (Miami, Florida: 1963) History: Designed by Cuban-born architect Hilario Candela, the stylish oceanside building on Biscayne Bay once boasted the longest span of cantilevered concrete in the world (the 326-foot-long roof), and hosted floating concerts on a stage moored to the shore. Decades of Floridians saw concerts, watched powerboat races, and even attended religious services here until the structure was deemed unsafe due to hurricane concerns and was closed down by the city. The areas underneath the angular overhang quickly became a canvas for graffiti art. Status: In 2008, Candela and others formed Friends of Marine Stadium to restore the structure, and after years of advocacy, have the support of local government organizations to rebuild the stadium. On July 11, 2013, the Miami commissioners voted to give the organization control of the site and the authority to rebuild. What You Can Do: Continue to support Friends of Marine Stadium, which has come up with several ways to raise funds for reconstruction, such as selling graffiti pieces created on site. "It brings a real sense of enclosure and escape when you are in that sleeping space surrounded by the marine ply," McCormack says.

The architects applied BM marine-grade paint to the containers’ corrugated metal walls. The home is deliberately compact to match the scale of the neighborhood homes

Atherton made the bathtub and sinks by hand, out of marine-grade plywood held together with aluminum spline joints and dyed with Behlen Solar Lux in jet black. To make them waterproof, he coated every surface in a thick layer of West System marine epoxy, popular with builders of wooden boats. The components are inexpensive, but the process is time consuming: Each piece took five days to make.

The Living Vehicle kitchen has a two-burner cooktop. It can be upgraded into a chef's kitchen with a marine-grade oven and a three-burner stovetop.

In the living room, a blue-gray velvet sofa is paired with a live-edge walnut coffee table and two marine-blue armchairs over an oval area rug.

The communal kitchen in the main house provides a space for guests to gather and cook together. This space is sleek and modern with hardware-less marine-grade plywood cabinets and a large, concrete island with seating.

Visitors can keep lookout for the St. Lawrence River’s resident marine mammals, which include Beluga and Sperm whales, from a pair of Adirondack chairs.

A modern kitchen features locally sourced Vancouver Island marble countertops and FSC marine grade plywood.

Many of the objects in the shop are made in the USA like the slinky and ice cream scoop. The Marine Band harmonica is made in Germany.

In the Mission District yard Monica Viarengo created for the Sharkey family, outdoor chalkboard paint by Sydney Harbour applied to marine-grade plywood offers a gallery for creativity. A mural by local artist Erik Otto—inspired by the neighborhood—brightens the back of the space.

Like much of the Italian Riviera, La Spezia on the Ligurian coast has a long maritime history. It was precisely this seafaring legacy that inspired the design of this tiny home, a 377-square-feet apartment that was reconfigured to clearly separate the living and sleeping areas. A cabinetry wall is constructed with marine plywood.
