All of the Jenn-Air appliances, including the washer and dryer, are electric, as the owners asked the city to cut the gas line to the house. The kitchen cabinetry is from IKEA and features custom, matte-gray doors and Silestone countertops. The floorboards are reclaimed maple from an old tire factory, sanded and stained gray.

The residents store perishable items that don’t need refrigeration—like fruits, vegetables, onions, and garlic—in maple-lined pantry drawers.

Gliss swivel stools and a Dowel bar stool share space in front of a custom maple kitchen island. The pendant lamps are by Lightolier.

The kitchen is outfitted with Akurum cabinets from Ikea. The island is also an Ikea cabinet, customized with maple panels to match the flooring.

Wire stair balustrades create an airy vibe while reinforcing the linear wood detailing throughout. In the dining area, a Sputnik-style chandelier by Rewire in Los Angeles hangs above an oxidized maple table from BDDW and Clifford Pascoe chairs from Metropolis Modern.

Tipsy Paperweight, $35 at the Dwell Store Tipsy is a tabletop object that is crafted from solid turned brass and turned maple. Structured in a teardrop shape with a weighted brass base and conical wood top, Tipsy is impossible to knock over, and can be used as a paperweight, accent piece, desktop toy, or even as a stress reliever.

Designed by Seth Eshelman in 2006, the Cain furniture series was conceived from a need for simple, accessible furniture. Ranging stools, benches, and chairs, the Cain Collection encompasses the Staach brand’s focus on sustainability in design and manufacturing. The wood used in each Cain furnishing comes directly from American mills and is then fabricated by hand with limited use of tools. The choice to reduce tool usage is a purposeful one—it helps achieve a higher level of sustainability by limiting the manufacturing carbon footprint. The Cain Chair is comprised of clean lines and a simple silhouette. The chair can be used at a dining room or kitchen table, or as additional seating in a living room.

Maple flooring was used on the second level.

The Mitre Stool is at once simple and complex, harnessing a basic form with unexpected visual details. Constructed in hard maple wood, the stool includes four slightly flared legs and an angular seat. Comprised of four separate planes of wood, the seat is designed as a play on geometric standards, creating a surprisingly comfortable seat that maintains a distinctive look. It is available in a counter height and as a low stool.

The kitchen is outfitted with a duel-fuel range by Bosch, a Diamonte Canopy hood by Faber, a LaPerla dishwasher by Miele, French-door refrigerator by LG, Blanco sink, and Compact Smart overn by Breville. Catifa 46 stools by Arper are stationed at the bar. The counters are quartz and the cabinets are solid maple. "Given that the owners’ intention was to stay and age in the house, we decided that the materials needed to be elegant and timeless and, in essence, could also age well in place," Tedesco says. "This led to devising a refined and warm palette of natural finishes. White carrara marble, oiled clear Douglas fir, and maple floors and millwork create a light, warm interior with a reddish hue that emanates when the sunlight washes the woods. The selection process included R-and-D on the materials to assess their ability to be both robust enough to handle every day wear and tear in the short term and acquire a beautiful patina long term. We also researched MSDS charts to ensure they were safe, non-toxic, and would not off-gas."

Some of the items, like the radio tube bulb available on the desk lamps, feel more novel than functional.

Originally inspired by components of Bower NYC’s furniture line, the Forma Sculptural Candle Set began as a small sculpture. After deciding that the piece needed another element to bring it to life, the designers added a candle—fire—to create a more complete accent. The set is comprised of a soy wax candle with a cedar scent that is housed in a simple glass vessel, a brass tube that can be used as a match extender, a corian surface, glass mirror, maple wood, and brass shapes. All of the elements combine to create a candle holder that is a truly functional work of art.

Walter Gropius designed the F-51 armchair for the director's room at the Bauhaus in Weimar. Filled with polyurethane foam, the armchair fabric or leather coated armchair is supported by an ash or maple frame.

All the cabinetry in the kitchen/dining area, including the door into the parlor bathroom, is of FSC-certified maple. Hand-blown lights of recycled glass hang over the dining table.

David Alan Basche, Alysia Reiner, and their six-year-old daughter, Liv, chat in the kitchen, which is defined by a reclaimed spalted maple countertop crafted from a felled 100-year-old specimen sourced by The Hudson Company. The barstools are from Blu Dot.

The Strut Shelving System from Brooklyn–based Souda is inspired by the Manhattan Bridge and the construction methods used for early aircraft carriers. The shelf presents a marriage of modern minimalism and classic architecture construction, as exemplified by the suspension style metal brackets and simple wood plank shelf. Designed to be durable enough to last for a lifetime, the Kaico collection is an enduring classic that blends function and thoughtful Japanese design.
