As the facade of a Bates Masi-designed home in Water Mill, New York, rises from eight to 14 feet high, the mahogany planks subtly widen. “It was quite a demand to make of the contractor,” architect Paul Masi says. “But the design was so much about traveling through the site and weaving [the house] together with the deck.”

Hawkins removed walls and swapped outdated storage for floor-to-ceiling African mahogany cabinetry.

The mahogany-paneled Poggenpohl kitchen system is original to the house. The kitchen opens to the living and dining area.

"The kitchen is pretty astonishing, really, considering it’s 40 years old," says resident Louise Jenkins. Large square tiles in green with sunflowers compliment the cabinets' natural wood finish.

Mahogany flooring, a continuation of the mahogany backyard deck and front porch, is enhanced with a clear finish. Vintage suitcases sit near rough sawn cedar walls, which are finished with an ebony stain.

The courtyard deck is also made of tallowwood, a native eucalyptus. White mahogany—a dense timber that is termite resistant—clads the exterior. The sustainably sourced timbers are also fire resistant, a crucial feature in Australia in light of frequent drought and resulting forest fires.

The Great Room sits below a lattice of Douglas Fir beams. Mahogany floors and casework evoke the traditional materials of Pacific Rim architecture.

The Passive House-certified home features high levels of insulation and high-performing, triple-glazed windows from Zola European Windows and Doors. Ample south-facing glazing is enhanced by exterior motorized aluminum shades, which can be lowered to block unwanted summer sun. A mahogany deck, finished with Penofin penetrating oil, hosts cafe chairs and a red table from Design Within Reach.

Benjamin Moore’s Cloud White paint color, which was used throughout the home, lets the African mahogany flooring stand out.

One of the most challenging aspects of the build was incorporating the residents' request for a diverse material palette. The flooring is ash and the cabinetry is Mahogany. Cash Barnes custom fabricated the steel railing as well as the bridge and insect screens.

Contractor Keith Romeo worked with Bates Masi on the varied mahogany planks used for the exterior decking, which are finished simply with wood toner by Cabot.

The sleeping loft is fitted with mahogany rails.

The adjacent open kitchen is made of mahogany (to match the floors, ceilings, and walls), accented by a volcanic stone backsplash and a Viking gas cooktop.

Reclaimed oak with a custom finish by LV Wood surrounds a staircase in a herringbone pattern. The new stairs are painted off black by Farrow & Ball, and the handrail that lines them is of salvaged mahogany.

The mahogany-paneled vestibule features gently angled stairs that rise to the living area, which boasts an impressive atrium.

An oversized mahogany door provides a grand entrance to the complex.

The house’s concrete and metal are warmed by mahogany-framed windows from Duratherm.

The dining room features a tongue-and- groove Douglas fir ceiling. Original built-ins include a mahogany bench anchored between cabinets whose fronts tilt at the house’s signature 15-degree angle.

Materials and craft play a significant role inside and out. The columns are Type 316 stainless steel – almost nautical grade. Floors and walls are walnut; windows are mahogany.

Tag Front designed a rectangular mahogany table with four ottomans nestling underneath, creating a simple brown block when not in use. When guests arrive, the ottomans slide out and there’s plenty of room for four. “I like to have people over and entertain,” Mandi says, “so it was important to have a dinner table that doesn’t take up much space.”

In the bathroom, even the shower is paneled in Philippine mahogany.

The original mahogany paneling remains in good condition.

The nursery features mahogany cabinets and the crib is from Crate and Barrel.

The master bathroom features custom mahogany cabinets and a Caesarstone countertop.
