The master bedroom is furnished with a queen bed and a cool-touch 10-inch memory foam mattress beneath a large skylight. Compared to last year’s model, the 2020 Living Vehicle offers two feet of extra space.

The LV Series homes by Chilean-American designer Rocio Romero are simple, modern, and environmentally conscious. These homes are meant to connect their owners to the outdoors through steel load-bearing posts that create large openings for glass windows. Specific designs can be tailored to the location and lifestyle of the customers. Although flat-packed and easily shipped, the LV series requires a contractor for construction.

The LV can be opened to the elements when the weather cooperates, allowing for generous cross-ventilation.

Starting at $274,995, the MAX Living Vehicle has nearly 300% more solar energy capacity than the CORE model with a 24 kWh battery pack.

The 2020 Living Vehicle PRO is the company’s most technologically advanced model (and Matthew's favorite for its ability to remain off-grid continuously in the right conditions) with a 47.66 kWh energy capacity, double the inverter power of the other models, and a 5.5 kW generator. Prices start at $349,995.

The custom zinc cabinets and quartzite countertops of Mark Berryman’s Tribeca apartment reflect the sun as it sets over Manhattan. Workstead designer Robert Highsmith kept the apartment’s original fir beams and painted its existing pipes Onyx by Benjamin Moore. The counter stools are by Sawkille, and the floors are white oak from LV Wood. The range is by Viking.

Kellogg spent five years working on the house, and the structure was completed in 1993.

Kitterman designed built-ins along one wall of the apartment to hide heating and cooling equipment. The pendant light, dining table, and chairs are all vintage, sourced from Europe and Palm Springs. Herringbone oak floors throughout are by LV Wood.

Reclaimed oak with a custom finish by LV Wood surrounds a staircase in a herringbone pattern. The new stairs are painted off black by Farrow & Ball, and the handrail that lines them is of salvaged mahogany.

When Rob and Mary Lubera started pulling threads to uncover the origins of their new home—the lone midcentury house amid rows of Tudor Revivals in suburban Detroit—not even architecture scholars could have anticipated what they would find. Theirs is the last surviving residence by Alexander Girard (1907–1993), a modernist visionary who made his name in textiles but tried his hand at virtually everything, architecture included. The shoji-like laminate screens, seen in the entryway, are characteristic of his Japanese-influenced work.
