“Everything out here has been something else,” designer Barbara Hill says of Marfa, Texas. It’s certainly true of her casita, which was formerly a grocery store: The 1,200-square-foot home is filled with reworked pieces, including the Elvis artwork she embellished with pink lights fabricated by the Neon Gallery in Houston and the refurbished Bertoia chairs from Cast + Crew. The minimal color palette is echoed in the freestanding Malm fireplace and the concrete floor sculptures by William Vizcarra from Wrong Marfa.

The cabin has abundant storage, although there isn’t much to store. “You’re certainly not going anywhere when you’re there,” says Nathalie. “It’s all work clothes or warm clothes or ranch clothes, you know?”

“Cooking is a family undertaking,” notes Meelena. “It’s something that you do socially, so having these gorgeous appliances certainly makes us want to use them, entertain, and create memorable experiences with loved ones in this house.”

The countertops in the kitchen are a mix of quartz surfaces and custom and salvaged stainless steel. "We use the kitchen all of the time, it turned out really nice," says Melissa. "It's very open, certainly one of the central focuses of the house, and is fun for entertaining."

Taking inspiration from Arlberg Valley, Austria to classic Nordic materials, the Troll Hus certainly adds a European touch to the California landscape. “The inspiring concept is that of a treehouse that, as if suspended between treetops, seamlessly and ingeniously blends with its surroundings.” Casper says.

The limited space means that every purchase has to be a rational one. So each sock, shirt, and shoe has to have a place, otherwise something else has to make way for it. Not ideal for those who enjoy Sunday-morning flea markets, but it certainly enforces a high degree of tidiness.

Sticker Shock Though colorful dashes here and there certainly enliven the sober interior, little adds a dose of whimsy like the wall decals found in the kids‘ rooms. “The steep site lends itself to the ‘upside down’ configuration,” Harkness explains. “It certainly wouldn’t work as well if you could only access the house via the lower level, as this is through the bedroom zone, so we included two entrances. The upper one involves walking across a little bridge.”

While technically a little later than midcentury, and certainly not a traditional home, this renovation of a 1980s RV by a Portland couple took advantage of the potential beyond the dingy wood laminate cabinets and the dirty beige carpet that was consuming the floor. Owner Liz Kamarul envisioned how she could transform it, imagining white cupboards, interesting wallpaper for the ceiling, and texture introduced by textiles.

Certainly Jennifer Luce's tastiest building is the delicious Extraordinary Desserts in San Diego. Dwell pal Christopher Puzio did the metal screen out front, rendered here by Publique Living.

To flip the house, they eliminated the second story, taking the ceilings high and the windows wide. To make up for the lost square footage, they added on a wing, built a separate garage with a guest apartment above it, and brought the hangout spaces to the front to capitalize on the views. "The original house had good, solid bones,” says Jennifer. “What if the whole wall was windows?” the homeowner asked, and that certainly worked—sunlight pours in through entire house from the front floor to ceiling window wall.

The tongue-and-groove ceiling has been painted white, which may not appeal to Eichler purists, but certainly helps brightens the home.

The updated kitchen receives natural light via a skylight, and certainly feels like it could be the galley on a boat.

Certainly a conversation piece, this stunning globe light acts as decor and supplemental lighting.

In an interview, designer Piero Lissoni shares, "Mamilla wants to express harmony with a solution that brings modernity and high class in a soft way, respecting the local traditions." On the rooftop, this statement certainly holds true. It is quite enjoyable to be surrounded by Knoll’s modern tables and sofas and Lissoni’s wood-paneled bar while reveling at the beauty and historic grandeur of the old city of Jerusalem. I loved this funny set of wire furniture designed in the 50's by John Rilsey. The Converso Gallery of Chicago was showing the chairs and they certainly added a bit of whimsy to the raft of sober, Scandinavian stuff I saw. -Aaron

I’ll never forget how Athens-based design duo Objects of Common Interest took over the gallery’s atrium last year, so I was excited to discover their presence at this show, too. Behind the sheer curtain, I found an entire room drenched in Barney-purple, outfitted with a carpet, dining table, stools with squishy seats, and resin tablewares that would certainly set the scene for an interesting dinner party.

Designers can enjoy a coffee break on the sofa. It certainly beats gathering around the water cooler.

With the beautiful ceilings, beams, and windows with foliage scenery, this loft certainly has a tree-fort type feel.
