The 52-foot-high roof deck overlooks Decatur Square. “The building may appear as an object, but someday, it’ll become the backdrop as all of it develops,” Carpenter says. The structure shares the lot with a 1920s bungalow containing a therapist’s office that abuts the first-floor gallery, as well as Lightroom 1.0.

A screened-in porch was a must-have for the residents (they love to sit outside but hate mosquitoes) and influenced the building's asymmetrical shape. "The question became how can we integrate this into the design of a modern house," says architect Staffan Svenson. "Can it be a screen porch without looking like one?" He devised a plan to hang a horizontal louver system from the structure to give the illusion that the powder-coated steel fins hover in place. He used the same material for the guard rail on the second story.

The house was shaped by spatial restrictions. "The angled walls push the interior spaces outward both visually and as experienced," says Svenson. "The horizontal lines of the railings and screen porches add to that. To increase this perception the angled walls occur only in areas suspended in the air—they are never tied to the ground.

The architect carved out a parking and storage area underneath the residence. "The house feels as though it floats above the ground plane," he says.

Hollander was inspired Robert Frank’s The Americans, the history of portrait photography and the great American road trip. She chose to depict people in their own homes because friendship, she thought when she started the project, happens in the flesh. “A real friend is someone whom you have over for dinner, drink too much red wine with, argue about art, politics, or whatever with and are still friends in the morning.”

A concrete floor slab also absorbs heat, helping to moderate the climate. The house doesn't require air conditioning. TACT conceived the minimalist interior scheme in order to place emphasis on the rich landscape just outside the windows. The house was carefully sited to maximize vistas at every turn.

The architects of AKB designed a south-facing facade, seen here, with recessed windows to minimize sun glare and solar heat gain. To the west is an assemblage of boreal trees—sugar maple, poplar, fir, hawthorn, cedar, and birch. The north looks out to the greater Georgian Bay. The home is clad in Western red cedar.

Interior designer Heidi Lachapelle chose unfussy furnishings with clean lines. “Nothing should feel decorative or unnecessary,” she says. “We looked for things that would age beautifully to speak to the wabi-sabi concept.” The oak daybed is by Bautier, the indoor/outdoor rug is by Dash & Albert, and the trapezoidal cushions on the concrete bench nod to similar ones that the wife saw at Georgia O’Keefe’s home and studio. The Scandinavian-inspired fireplace throws heat from two sides.

Architecture firm NADAAA planned a striated addition to a brick neo-Georgian house in Boston with the owners’ primary goal in mind: to engage with the outdoors year-round. The walls of the rear kitchen and living space are virtually all glass, allowing sight lines to the existing gardens and new pool house through a series of framed vignettes onto the backyard landscape. The glass box is bookended by uniform “fins” that mark the edge of each picture window, as shown here. Photo by John Horner.

In February of 2007, two San Francisco art and travel addicts purchased a 3,200-square-foot former Chinese laundry and tooth-powder factory with column-free interiors and a zigzagging sawtooth roof in lower Pacific Heights. They customized a pair of shipping containers to accommodate their collection and reflect their passions, and hired a local company to sandblast the interior to expose the board-formed concrete walls and replace the carpeted floors with Georgia hickory pecan planks to further lengthen the loft and make it look more like a warehouse.
