WAVE CANDLESTICK The Wave Candlestick combines traditional craft production with a contemporary design sensibility. Hand-turned by artisans in Jaipur, India and designed by Michael Dreeben for AKMD, the Wave Candlestick mimics the undulating curves of sine waves. Each candlestick is made from repurposed, sustainably—harvested Mango wood -a native tree to India— and is burned and oil finished.

Polar Life Haus is a Finnish family company founded in 1907. The company is locally known as Honkatalot.

Gensler's Constellation of Fins speaks to the surfing condition on several planes: the physical aspect of how waves address the bathymetry of the Bay, a snapshot of wave-riding cultural hotspots, and the navigational equipment that is defined by them.

The first-floor bathroom is divided into separate functions so that it can be used by more than one person at a time: the space includes a water closet,a shower, and a larger area with a pair of sinks. The towel racks and fixtures are from Kohler.

In the kitchen, black cabinetry and countertops from Swan Company offer a crisp counterpoint to the house’s white walls. Appliances from Swan Company and a Santini faucet ensure that the space is also functional.

Designed by Alvar Aalto in 1936, the Aalto Vase is inspired by the beauty of the natural world, including the untamed shorelines of Finland’s thousands of lakes. A classic Iittala design, this vase is available in several sizes and colors, and looks just as elegant without flowers as it does when filled. Each handblown vase is designed to mimic the water it contains, creating a distinctive accent piece for the home.

“[The owner] needed a good working kitchen, the ability to seat up to 20 at dining tables, and accommodate over 100 for cocktails and fundraisers,” Walker said. The Tonon Wave chairs are covered in Dalmatian upholstery by Calvin Fabrics; they sit on a Bursa Wool Rug from West Elm.

The most dramatic view in the apartment, the First Presbyterian Church looms large in the Kovel living room.

Just as the stairs use movement to change how residents experience the space, the walls also provide a new and subtle awareness: concrete ridges—seen right—cast changing shadows that mark the passage of the sun. Features like these, in the words of Carmona, “manipulate your experience, bring [a] different consciousness,” and elevate your awareness of the space.

Dunlop demonstrates the deck’s secondary use: as a launching pad into the concrete plunge pool on the first floor.

The home’s forms, which are masked by the cantilevered entrance, become apparent once one enters the central courtyard. Living spaces abut three of its sides, looking in with full-height windows. The roofline can be seen fluctuating as one goes from front-to-back. The memorial tree, around which the courtyard and home are built, will continue to grow in coming years.

Spiekermann and Dulkinys agree that their house—the first they’ve built from the ground up—is definitely different.

Concrete pillars are key in the event of a tidal wave.

The façade designed by Apollo Architects and Associates features an overhanging upper level, which ensures that the entrance is pleasantly shaded and demarcates the property’s two parking spaces. The home’s wooden structure is clad in a bright white exposed concrete.

The living room is situated across the courtyard from the kitchen and dining room. Actus’ Graham sofa and beige carpet provide soft textural touches. The wall console was designed by Apollo Architects and Associates and created for the site by Zousakukagu.

The table, chairs, and bench in the dining area all come from Actus. Their walnut finish harmonizes with the ceiling’s Oregon pine louvers. The ceiling’s pitch and the direction of its louvers guide the eye down towards the central courtyard.

Ten Thousand Waves, the nine-screen installation by Isaac Julien, pictured here while on display at the Museum of Modern Art, will be part of MOCAA’s permanent collection and be featured in MOCAA’s atrium. Other highlights include pieces from Africans from all over the continent and the diaspora, including work by Kudzanai Chiurai, Nandipha Mntambo, Edson Chagas, and Zanele Muholi. Mark Coetzee, the collection’s curator, is originally from South Africa and says building a contemporary art museum in Africa is a dream come true. “I’ve always wanted to do this since I was a kid,” Coetzee says. “Normally collectors collect what they collect, and at a certain point, they say ‘Let’s start a museum,’” he says. At the base of the first floor landing, black recinto volcanic stones divide the first floor’s informal dining area from the living room. This floor also features a bedroom and kitchen while the floor above holds a master bedroom, master bath, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, an entertainment room, and patio. The stairs—which are all-oak—descend to a ground-floor playroom and outdoor deck.

Drawing inspiration from the beauty of the natural world, the undulating shape of each Aalto Vase alludes to the untamed shorelines of Finland's thousands of lakes. The Aalto Vase is decidedly sculptural, making it as much a striking visual accent when left empty on a tabletop or shelf as when it is filled with freshly cut flowers. Each Aalto Vase is mouthblown in the Iittala glass factory and is designed to mimic the water that it contains, creating a distinctive and artistic accent piece.

The living room also opens onto a private terrace, concealed within the entrance’s cantilevered form. It serves as a secluded space to take in the sun. Thanks to the sizeable opening between the living room and terrace, it brings yet more light into the home. The terrace’s table and chairs are from Ikea.

Pernille Snedker Hansen has repurposed an old marbling technique giving Nordic wood a supernatural, organic, colourful and vibrant pattern. The wooden planks for "Wave" are made one by one, and thus each floor board acquires a unique pattern of coloured stripes.

Visitors climb from level to level via a retractable steel ladder, which begins at the ground-floor plunge pool. The architects used industrial materials like steel and concrete throughout to "keep it raw,” according to Kampshoff.

Falck, a Danish health care company, worked with Designit to redesign the standard first-aid kit. The simple, colorful kit presents an intuitive visual representation of the materials contained within, making it easy use in an emergency. Located in Orinda, California, a three-bedroom house by architect Greg Faulkner took its first aesthetic cue from a large oak tree on the site. Cor-Ten steel panels clad the exterior, while white oak offers a material counterpoint on the interior. A 12-foot-wide sliding pocket wall opens the living/dining area to a terrace with a Wave Chaise longue by Paola Lenti. The landscape design is by Thuilot Associates.
