Shot on location at Cape Town’s Truth Coffee café, its steampunk aesthetic was designed by Haldane Martin. It’s the first year that a film has been nominated (feature-length Four Corners was also in the running), which seems fitting, given that this was also the inaugural year of the Design Indaba Film Festival. The dozen nominees for Most Beautiful Object in South Africa spanned a wide number of genres, including media and tech, as well as the more expected furniture, dresses, and jewelry.

In the film, inconceivable environments combine with sensory-rich furniture pieces to create an unexpected context.

A surrealistic Diva "floats" in a still from UNSCENE. “The concept behind UNSCENE was to take otherwise inanimate objects out of their normal environments and into unexpected contexts bringing them to life in new ways," says Danforth.

Wood references its natural roots in a still from the film. “Questioning the way we see has become a constant source of inspiration for my work,” says Shladovsky.

Each of the three rooms references a decade and is named for a film from that era. The master bedroom, named for Dušan Makavejev's 1971 film W.R.: Mysteries of the Organism, celebrates films once banned by the government for dealing with taboo topics.
