"Teaching and learning methods are intrinsically linked to the environments in which they are produced," says Jantzen. "We must consider the most sustainable [building] methods." Those include simple approaches such as improving air quality through a more open-plan design.

Nestled in a celebrated midcentury neighborhood, the Riley Residence was a 1957 ranch house two doors down from Crestwood Hills, the Los Angeles cooperative development known for its collection of A. Quincy Jones masterpieces. The L-shaped floor plan on a large wooded lot was reimagined by architect Cory Buckner, who remodeled and developed an addition inspired by the nearby icons. Quirky retro charm radiates from the home with pistachio green cabinetry in the eat-in kitchen. These were complemented with some quiet complements like Blizzard countertops by Caesarstone and white tile by Ann Sacks. A nook with a tulip-style table by ModShop, a custom upholstered banquette by Johannes Interiors, and a Caboche chandelier by Foscarini accentuates the home's retro charm.

Metropole Aluminum House (1949)

The winner of a 1949 contest to create a portable classroom for French students, the gleaming metal structure might have resembled a sci-fi spacechip to '50s schoolchildren. Prouvé's meticulous metalsmithing is on display in this highly regarded example of portable prefab housing, crafted in his Nancy workshop and easily assembled with a few tools. He included a glassed-in garden and wooden accents to the interior walls to make the structure less imposing.

Salmela Architect

Architect David Salmela relied on plant coverage to help maintain the strict standards of a German Passivhaus design system. Passivhaus, which utilizes a thick envelope created by insulated walls and roof and triple-glazed windows is a highly effective way to structure ultra-low energy systems. Salmela added a living roof, planted with butterfly-attracting vegetation, and surrounding tree covers to shade the building.
