Milwaukee studio Vetter Denk Architects designed this eye-catching prefab on the banks of Moose Lake, Wisconsin, as a weekend retreat. The home was based on an idea presented by the home's owner, who was inspired by a screw-top jug of $9.99 red wine.

Earth House is dedicated to Dong-joo Yoon, a Korean poet who died as a political prisoner in Japan during WWII.

“My grandfather, George Fasullo, was an architect who died before I was born,” says architect Ryan Bollom. “My mom used both of our drawings as wallpaper in the secondary living space.” During the lockdown, Bollom formed an extended bubble with his parents, and he and his wife, also an architect, used the space as an office.

Balogh, who died in 2006, was a celebrated local architect. He was also credited for designing an estimated 150 structures throughout Michigan, Illinois, and Arizona.

Even the brick which the house has, remained from the original version of the building - this is the most profitable material used by 99.9% of Ukrainian developers. It is factory-made, conventional. However, we didn’t have an opportunity to change it due to lack of time and monetary resources. Client put us in this position and he was frightened. And we were not.​​​​​​​

The top of the mezzanine wall peels away, allowing the space to remain somewhat open. It also provides an opportunity to inset a flush, recessed, flexible LED light into the top of the wall as it dies into the ceiling.

When Rob and Mary Lubera started pulling threads to uncover the origins of their new home—the lone midcentury house amid rows of Tudor Revivals in suburban Detroit—not even architecture scholars could have anticipated what they would find. Theirs is the last surviving residence by Alexander Girard (1907–1993), a modernist visionary who made his name in textiles but tried his hand at virtually everything, architecture included. The shoji-like laminate screens, seen in the entryway, are characteristic of his Japanese-influenced work.
