JG Domestic (Philadelphia, Pennslyvania)

Located adjacent to Philadelphia’s bustling 30th Street Train Station, JG Domestic could have easily felt like an extension of the frenetic commuter hub. Instead, the mood inside is positively bucolic. A “living wall” of vegetation, plaid, striped, and burlap seating, and shelves lined with farmhouse trinkets lend the space tranquility. The lights on top of the shelves are custom by Créme.

In the Spotlight“I’m a huge proponent of lighting as architecture,” says Nix, who suggests illuminating objects instead of empty space. “Light on an object creates ambiance.” In their apartment, they’ve trained track lights from the Polish company LightArt on the Cube, as well as on the handmade cabinetry. The fixtures, which Novak-Zemplinski describes as “good quality and inexpensive in comparison to more well-known brands,” are also installed at the MoMA in New York.

Practical DecorationOne of the secrets to living neatly in a small apartment, says Nix, is lots of storage space. To that end, the couple built big cabinets along the walls. To create a sense of visual unity throughout the eclectic but compact space, the couple hand-carved the tree pattern from the kitchen into these cabinet doors (from a template) using an electric router. It’s more than ornament: The cutouts eliminate the need for jutting cabinet pulls.

The cup's 13-ounce interior tracks your consumption and issues suggestions accordingly—for example, once you input your height, weight, gender, and other metrics, the Vessyl will tell you how much water you need for a day’s worth of hydration. If you’re hitting the soft drinks, it’ll show how much sugar you’ve consumed as well.

The architect designed the now-iconic Open Hand monument, as a symbol of India’s non-alignment during the Cold War. Due to limited funds, the structure wasn’t put in place until 1985, and today it’s a far stronger symbol of Chandigarh itself than of Nehru’s foreign policy.

Drawing inspiration from the beauty of the natural world, the undulating shape of each Aalto Vase alludes to the untamed shorelines of Finland's thousands of lakes. The fluid aesthetic reaffirms the deep connection between man and nature, while making a statement against the failure of industrial production to meet universal human needs. Available in several colors, the 1936 Aalto Vase is one of Iittala’s most celebrated glassware designs.

The Ateenan Aamu Glass Pendants were designed by Kaj Franck in 1953 and were relaunched by Iittala in 2011 in honor of the 100th anniversary of Franck’s birth. This set of three pendants is light and delicate, and can be used as an interior decoration near a window to create a subtle reflection of light. When moved by a light breeze, the bubbles within each pendant create a soft, enchanting sound. Although each pendant appears similar, Franck designed the bubbles to rest in different places, creating a subtle variance reminiscent of the organic nature of dewdrops on a leaf or rain collected against a windowpane.

Illustrator and designer Mark McGinnis creates graphic prints that expertly blend line and color. His Menagerie Collection presents a series of prints that depict animals and flora in a range of soft, yet vibrant colors. Although compositionally simple, each print is comprised of several parts—the graphic is screen-printed on 140 lb. arches watercolor paper, after which McGinnis fills the colored print with a hand-drawn line sketch, ensuring that no two prints are exactly the same. From there, the 100 percent cotton paper is mounted and framed in an ash wood frame. Each print in the series, like this Red Bull, can be used on its own, or coordinated with other prints in the series to create a menagerie of wall art. Each limited edition print is exclusive to the Dwell Store and is signed on the left side of the print, and numbered on the right.
