The sunken living room allows for delineation of space while keeping an open-plan environment

The master bath incorporates custom cabinets by Bob Clausen, fixtures by Grohe, Hansgrohe, and Kohler, and a sink by Duravit. Plush Lisbon cork carpets the floor.

“This house for me is about contemplation,” says Adrian. “You come here from the city and the place is saying, ‘Hi, meet yourself again.’”

North Carolina firm Skram Furniture Company has created a flexible and functional line of containers that can be utilized in various spaces, from offices to kitchens.

The plan is super efficient but with gracious moments. This was also family's home for four generations, so preserving the house’s original shape and honoring that history was important factor in the design process.

The preserved railing was painted Benjamin Moore “Wrought Iron.” A soffit, its underside lined with square-edge white oak tongue and groove cladding, both defines the entry to the primary suite, and creates a cozy feel for the couch beneath it. The Andy Warhol’s Flower, 1964 and KAWS’s Seated Companion sculpture in the artist’s studio cleverly represent both the beauty and frustration of creating art.

The courtyard and pool are adjacent to the entry stair and half a level above the street, so that no excavation was required. This brings the courtyard closer to the upper level living areas, while still allowing the guest suite on the lower level to feel connected to the courtyard.

The flooring was a major new addition. While it appears to be concrete, it is actually gray cork sheeting, laid in large tiles. The material is natural, fully recyclable, soft to walk on, cool in summer, warm in winter, and is able to withstand moisture.

The ceiling height in the central hall was raised, and mechanical equipment and ducting were relocated to the roof. The double sliding pocket doors on the left side, which were part of the original design, were replaced with new doors and hardware as well as custom pocket covers.

The yellow fiberglass hydraulic panels add a colorful touch to decidedly minimalist interior color scheme.

The open, split-level plan allows for continuous flow from space to space, and uninterrupted views from the inside out. The original radiant heating system remains, and cool gray cork floors provide comfort and warmth.

Built-in bookcases in the living room echo the birch ply of the kitchen cabinetry.

The yoga room built for Claire’s mother, who is a yoga instructor, is one of the architects’ favorite areas in the home. The meditative retreat frames desert views through a long window, and is the only room in the home with cork flooring rather than concrete. Custom walnut cabinetry minimizes clutter.

The designers rebuilt the vanity with MAXI Film birch plywood in black, and a Caesarstone raw concrete composite stone counter.

The Koi pond appears as an interior extension of the outdoors. Water flows underneath a large pane of glass to an exterior half of the pond that is shaded underneath the covered patio.

The west brick wall continues to the interior and serves as an accent wall dividing the entry hall from the living room. A corner of the room is furnished with an Eames lounge chair, a Nelson Bubble Lamp, and a Silas Seandel coffee table.

Custom, built-in bunk beds were constructed out of Baltic birch plywood, which stand out against the dark cork floors. Each bed includes a sconce for reading, along with built-in storage. In the bunk room, a sliding partition that opens to the adjacent catwalk adds a sense of whimsy.
