"Beauty," Olafur Eliasson, 1993.
In this work, a spotlight shines through a layer of mist to create a rainbow that's only visible from certain angles.
Faux timber doors, painted black, along with a brick facade help the dwelling blend with its surroundings: the Victorian homes of the Moseley neighborhood in Birmingham, UK.
The home's rear is thoroughly modern. Blue bricks, salvaged from the preexisting building, are now the pavers in the entrance and patio.
Post Architecture designed this 1,800-square-foot home for two yoga studio owners in Toronto. A century-old coach house that formerly occupied the site was deemed to be in too poor shape to restore. Since the house is on a small lot—adjacent to the existing, main house—and close to its other neighbors, architect Gloria Apostolou devised a C-shaped structure that receives light from a south-facing courtyard, creating privacy in the other directions.

Here, a walkway overlooks the gym below. "Inside this building, you can sense and see its past," says the homeowner. "You don't forget that you're living in an old coach house."
The coach’s front and rear bumpers, sides and wheels are wrapped in an ultra-durable protecting coating to protect against scrapes and scratches.
Coach houses must include a garage, so the entry hall leads directly upstairs to the living spaces.
This coach house was one of the very first to be completed under Chicago's recent ADU Ordinance.

When Rob and Mary Lubera started pulling threads to uncover the origins of their new home—the lone midcentury house amid rows of Tudor Revivals in suburban Detroit—not even architecture scholars could have anticipated what they would find. Theirs is the last surviving residence by Alexander Girard (1907–1993), a modernist visionary who made his name in textiles but tried his hand at virtually everything, architecture included. The shoji-like laminate screens, seen in the entryway, are characteristic of his Japanese-influenced work.
