The horizontal layout of the home allows for easy movement throughout the interior, while the line of the continuous roof seems to extend into the trees. Enlarging the opening of the home allowed for impressive views of the river and surrounding area.

The great room's high, pitched roof and neutral walls give the space an open, tranquil feel, making it a desirable spot for the couple to pursue two of their passions: classical music and literature.

Privacy can often be an issue when living in such close proximity with your neighbors. Each of the units include their own private entrance and there are no shared walkways. Whether the unit has a deck or patio, all the units are separated by a wood wall to ensure privacy.

Surrounded on all sides by a sweeping Canadian hayfield, the 23.2 House is an angular ode to rural life.

In the Acadian village of Caraquet, YH2 Architecture raised two identical cabins on a site 200 feet from the sandy shores of Chaleur Bay. The home is inhabited by a single family and used as a vacation spot.

Many prefab architects and suppliers specialize in either modular or panelized construction. Minneapolis architect Charlie Lazor has worked with both mediums. This lake house in rural Ontario, Canada, is an example of one of his modular projects. It was built in a Wisconsin factory about 400 miles away.

Locally sourced Canadian plywood was used for the flooring throughout the home, and all doors and windows were replaced with low-energy upgrades. The couple shares their space with guide dogs they foster through a local organization.

The original design did not exploit the lower part of the house, so Carle added a bar and lounge area facing the lake at the ground level. He also installed water-based geothermal heating in the basement. “It allows the concrete floor to be heated and to generate most of the heating of the house, while a second smaller air pump assures a supplement of air on the ground floor and air conditioning for summer.”

The simple materials and forms represent continuity with traditional Acadian architecture. The retreat is sheathed in metal sheets.

The Japanese-style bathroom, which is clad in teak, features a matching tub and sink by Bath in Wood.

The home’s cubed shape keeps the footprint small, while the overhang was designed to accommodate the changing angle of the sun. It prevents overheating in summer while admitting as much winter sunlight as possible.

A south-facing wall of windows allows for spectacular views and maximizes passive solar heating.

The home's exterior staircase features a diagonal handrail, constructed in three parts and painted slightly different turquoise tones. It contrasts with the surrounding landscape, adding dynamism and excitement to the otherwise simple, static structure of the home, which is clad in naturally weathered cedar siding.

“The owners were looking for a relaxed, welcoming environment,” says architect Sylvain Bilodeau. They wanted something “conceptually similar to a cottage, yet more refined, particularly in the relationships between spaces and between people. The goal was to have a present, living, and enthusiastic architecture that engages the senses.”

Gander’s lounge sports a 69-foot-long, 12-foot-tall mural by Canadian artist Kenneth Lochhead, overlooked by Christen Sorensen armchairs.

Designed by architects Rick Shean and Christopher Simmonds, a project in Quebec, Canada, was a winner of the 2014 Architects Challenge, a collection of annual submissions each year that display architectural creativity and feature Marvin Windows and Doors. On our Design for Humankind panel, Christine Marvin will represent a family business dedicated to accommodating residents of all abilities.

Here, the high ceiling, a style borrowed from industrial lofts, serves a utilitarian purpose. Gymnast rings hung overhead allow athletes to suspend themselves 25 feet in the air.

The international transit lounge at Gander Airport has retained its mid-century Robin Bush seating and Mondrianesque terrazzo floor. Senior curator Rachel Gotlieb from the Gardiner Museum in Toronto says that selecting such modern trimmings for the point-of-entry “was the beginning of a long march to show that Canada was a progressive nation.”

One of the airport’s main features was the waiting room in which passengers could relax during stopovers without going through customs.

A light grey-brown brick facade provides a contemporary aesthetic in Montreal’s Rosemont-Petite-Patrie neighborhood. Developer Maitre Carre and the firm Architecture Open Form worked together to introduce a contemporary style to the area. The project includes three two-story town houses and three above with a mezzanine and rooftop patio.

The benches serve as furniture and space dividers, while heavy scaffolding underneath creates desks and bunks, perfect for an office space or impromptu sleeping area. The arrangement integrates a fireplace, movie projector, and movable feather cushions to encourage relaxation. The clamp lighting is equipped with WiFi-controlled bulbs by TCP.

Bleacher-style benches meet at right angles in the main interior space. The west-facing and south-facing seats are stained in slightly hues. Pillowcases are custom dyed to match the bleachers.

The first of the sister volumes contains the living areas, while the second houses the bedrooms and garage.

Pink Umbrellas by Claude Cormier Canada’s Sugar Beach, located in downtown Toronto, offers a whimsical way to experience sand and water in an urban environment. To ratchet up the fun, Montreal designer Claude Cormier dreamed up these pink umbrellas to shade visitors in an area also featuring a colorful fountain display. The hues at Sugar Beach fit the name and contrasts the downtown core.

Marvin has a stated dedication to Universal Design, and planning for the long term. The Canadian project includes tilt-turn and hopper windows, with easy-to-reach handles.
