In the dining room, furniture by Wegner and local designers Speke Klein blends with the white oak floors and stair.

The couple purchased the living room’s H.W. Klein chairs with the house. Another existing piece was the mezzanine’s daybed, designed by Peter Hvidt and Orlando Mølgaard Nielsen. An original floating staircase leads to the mezzanine and then up to the second floor. The open, straight-forward spaces speak to one of Christian’s guiding principles: “Simplicity is the key,” he says.

HabHouse renovated this Pasadena midcentury and gave it a completely new kitchen designed according to its original footprint. The materials were chosen in accordance with the original architect Calvin Straub's favored materials: vertical grain Douglas Fir.

Close to any modernist's heart is the home of Charles and Ray Eames, one of midcentury's most dynamic duos. Their home in California is iconic for its steel framed windows, birch paneled interiors, double-height ceiling, and array of their own pieces of furniture amidst a range of books, artwork, and artifacts from across the world. On the opposite page is a living room by Joe D'Urso for fashion designer Calvin Klein. Designed in 1975 in New York City, the space is remarkable for its functional, simple style that embodied Klein's fashion sense, filled with neutral shades, exposed ductwork, and a minimalist aesthetic.

Artist Yves Klein created an eponymous shade of blue for his pigment-driven "monochrome" paintings and nude lady transfers. We love him for that; pick up NYC-based Workaday Handmade's ceramic bowl in homage. ($18 at Leif Shop)

“[The owner] needed a good working kitchen, the ability to seat up to 20 at dining tables, and accommodate over 100 for cocktails and fundraisers,” Walker said. The Tonon Wave chairs are covered in Dalmatian upholstery by Calvin Fabrics; they sit on a Bursa Wool Rug from West Elm.

Architect George Bradley and his husband, Eddie Baba, renovated a 1941 house in San Francisco. Tiles from Heath Ceramics surround the Ortal Clear 130LS fireplace. The white ceramic logs are by Klein Reid (but of course can be replaced with real firewood!), and the firewood storage continues the same dark horizontal band that contrasts with the light-colored fireplace cladding.

Famed architect A. Quincy Jones designed the Calvin House in Tarzana, Los Angeles, in 1960.
