Custom-designed furniture outfits the interior of a bunker-turned-vacation retreat in the Netherlands.

The historic site consists of an old farmhouse, stable, and shed, along with bunkers and artillery foundations from the both World War I and World War II. The stable has been converted into a modern 5,683-square-foot bed and breakfast establishment called The Bunkers.

Like an archaeological site, remains of stoneware can be found in the recycled clay from the Sausalito factory.

The bunker below the home currently serves as a storage area.

Between some of the bunkers and pavilions is a series of open courtyards, which are shaded by the continuously running roof. The spaces are part of the architect's intention to create varying experiences with nature.

Another set of stairs lead up from the kitchen to the two loft spaces. Circular skylights dot the ceiling, reading as circular shafts brining natural light into the bunker-like habitation.

Inside the bunkers, each one serves a different purpose, with some used as storage and others used as private living ares. Here, this bathroom features simple finishes of local wood, with skylights overhead to brighten the space.

This beautiful property located in West Flanders, Belgium has an impressively rich history. Built in 1839, the buildings were used as a fort, watch point and jail house, while some brick and concrete bunkers on the property date back to WWI.

To update the kitchen for this apartment in the Leather District, Chris Greenawalt of Bunker Workshop and contractor Michel Beaudry created a clean-lined space. The space is designed to accommodate the client's busy schedule, which affords him little time for cooking.

This 191-square-foot cabin near Vancouver and its glass facades "forces you to engage with the bigger landscape," architect Tom Kundig says, but it seals up tight when its owner is away. Two friends spent three years reviving this 16th-century Basque church near Bilbao, Spain. Abandoned since the late 1970s, the church was in need of serious repair. The roof had caved in and vegetation had thoroughly invaded the structure. Built in the mid-16th century, with some add-ons in the form of an 18th-century bell tower and sacristy, the church had obvious archaeological and historical value.

The island is also known for its many archaeological sites, which offer evidence of a highly developed culture—whose descendants still inhabit the island.

Architects who practice in dense cities know its almost impossible to add square footage to an apartment. Yet at a garden-level residence in Boston's historic Beacon Hill neighborhood, Chris Greenawalt of Bunker Workshop was able to unearth 70 square feet of living space through a little excavation.

Cities that are inundated by tourists, such as Palma de Mallorca, Spain, can suffer severe housing shortages that call for the reappropriation of unused space. Architect Carles Oliver undertook just this task, rehabbing an old, empty building with a budget of just over $21,000. Through an urban sharecropping contract, the work on the home was done in exchange for three years of rent.

Marrying home cooking and an archaeological field trip, Mas de la Pyramide in Bouches-du-Rhône is probably the world’s only restaurant found in an ancient Roman quarry. For proprietor and chef Lolo Mauron, the caves are both his business and his birthright. Lolo, 92, has spent his entire life here, surrounded by an incredible hodgepodge of old farm tools, collectible cars, and other bric-à-brac from the caverns’ history.

The home’s mix of dark ipe wood, concrete, and glass give credence to Winter’s description of it as “an open bunker.”

Vivos xPoint bunkers come in five standard layouts, but floor plans can also be customized. The interiors are 26.5 feet wide and 60 or 80 feet long, with 12.5-foot ceilings. The bunkers come unfurnished.

SHED designed a half-buried, concrete boat bunker with a green roof to provide a windbreak and privacy from the neighbors, as well as storage for water craft. The concrete is repeated throughout the landscape, and the design references coastal defense bunkers seen around the Kitsap Peninsula, says the firm.

Vivos xPoint, the self-proclaimed “largest survival community on earth,” consists of 575 concrete bunkers on a former U.S. military base near the Black Hills area of South Dakota.
