You might not think a sparsely populated world with the merest suggestion of depth would be a compelling one to live in. But the longer you look through Toronto-based My Shadowplay, the closer you'll become to a convert to Minimalism. Follow along at @my_shadowplay.

The black facade of the Yatabes’ house may turn a darkly futuristic face to its suburban block, but behind it the house is full of light. In Saitama, a tightly packed neighborhood near Tokyo, the black metal screen affords the family privacy without sacrificing outdoor space.

Residents are allowed a small swath to plant gardens. "A lot of credit is due to the landscape architect," says Barlow, and "Mies's floor-to-ceiling windows make the spaces feel open, while at the same time the canopy of trees makes you feel protected. It's a private, quiet, green oasis within spitting distance of the freeway, and you'd never know it."

In The Groove

Submitted by: Name not provided

Designer's Description:

With my two-year-old daughter nipping at my heels and tasked with helping my husband run his music branding company, my main design goal for "In The Groove" is to add efficiencies to our lives and to create a beautiful space that is as good at multi-tasking as I have had to become. By enclosing a small back porch and a hall-like overhang area through the use of an adaptable sliding wall system, I'm able to create an indoor-outdoor multipurpose area and integrate a separate granny flat into the main house as guest bedroom.
