Kindest and gentlest: This year's Dwell on Design show floor saw not one but two air purifiers that excel in both form and function. Above, the Swedish company BlueAir; below, California's own Rabbit Air.

The 377-square-foot Woodland Cabin by London-based practice De Rosee Sa was completed over the course of multiple trips to the lakeside lot in the village of Nouvelles in southern Belgium. The steeply pitched structure is clad in timber that was stained black from used tractor engine oil, which is a popular finish for local agricultural buildings.

The large open-air pavilion, also overlooking the lake, echoes the retreat’s timber construction and natural hues. It hosted the architect’s wedding ceremony in the year of its completion, 2014.

Jones, Partners: Architecture envisioned an open-air structure that resembles an "inside-out RV." A variety of prefab modules host essential activities, like showering and cooking, immediately outside the structure. The unit folds into one rectangular block, so it can be easily transported by trailer.

Compressed-Air Energy Storage Wind energy is used to power compressors that inject air at high pressure into large underground chambers. When demand peaks and the wind flags, the pressurized air is released—often with a small amount of natural gas—to power turbines or generators, producing electricity. The first such plant opened in Germany in 1978.

De Rosee Sa designed and built this black timber cabin on a budget of $32,872. The home’s exterior, which was stained using tractor engine oil, references the rural vernacular of its locale.

This residence is centered around a 34-foot-tall light well, which floods the home with warm natural light. In the summer, this area is transformed into a heat chimney by drawing warm air up to the operable skylight. Cooler air flows in through the glazed windows at the garden level, blending beauty and sustainability.

In the kitchen, walnut cabinets and polished concrete create a clean atmosphere to cook and entertain. The marble table and purple Fermob chairs are perfect for light meals.

Modern toothbrushes are something we can get behind. The Tann collection was designed by Andreas Engesvik for Jordan.

Metcalf and several other South African based designers/illustrators created various colorful murals for a large financial institution meant to communicate a core brand value, while remaining unique in style and execution. The designer chose 'charisma' and 'inspiration' as his two core brand values to work off of.
