The Billboard House by David Salle with AA Studio The project marks artist David Salle’s first foray into architecture, and incidentally, he’s his own first client. In collaboration with Brooklyn-based AA Studio, he developed a modular design for himself suited to Marfa, Texas, the desert capital of the art world. It largely comprises glass walls, save the ones that will feature his artwork, and a Northern-tilted roof to maximize solar panel exposure.

The screen around the lanai is made from extrene, a material used by the military for radio towers. The welded-steel sculpture, set atop a pile of a’a rocks, was made by Craig.

For an escape from bustling San Francisco, architect Craig Steely and his wife Cathy have created a modernist getaway on a lava field next to a black sand beach on Hawaii’s Big Island. Fitted with floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over the ocean, the steel-framed home is one of several homes that Steely built on the recently active lava field.
