The cabin’s basic structure was reclaimed from a barn built in 1840 and purchased from Heritage Barns out of Waco, Texas. The same company supplied the recycled wood that clads the walls, though the ceiling boards are new. “We stained them with a gray wash to match the tones of the post and beam, but with a more clean look,” Bronee explains. The concrete floors were polished and waxed for a sleek finish.

LDa Principal John Day designed and built this 3,000 square foot home on one of the original downtown streets in Medfield, MA. The exterior of the house is a version of an 1840 Greek Revival. John worked with Connor Building of Vermont on the design and the panelized fabrication. The interior layout is an open and updated mixture of reclaimed pine floors, traditional trim, tall windows, a modern German kitchen and more contemporary details. The house is designed to be not only energy efficient, but to also comply with a budget that is not reflected in the final product. Constructed with quality, affordable materials that have been applied and designed in a unique way, this home is an excellent lesson in the value of sweat and design equity.
