The Flying Nest's current incarnation is called Avoriaz 1800—a reference to the hotel's location at 1,800 meters above sea level.

"Since we're completely off grid we operate off of hauled water, so we have three 1,800 gallon tanks that get filled up every other week. But for those same reasons, people off the grid don't really have pools because they're hard to maintain, but we did it anyway."

In New York about two hours north of New York City, architecture and interiors firm BarlisWedlick created an eclectic compound designed to suit a client with an idiosyncratic wish list. In the kitchen, a custom Stickbulb LED lamp hangs above a kitchen island topped by concrete from Get Real Surfaces. The cabinets and island feature a modern version of a traditional board and batten siding that are given an even more contemporary feel with the concrete countertop.

Another house built from Wright's Prefab #1 plan for Marshall Erdman & Associates, the Socrates Zaferiou House in New York state, was sold in 2014. The Prefab #1 layouts, which ranged in size from 1,800 to 2,400 square feet, shared a single story, L-shaped plan with a "pitched-roof bedroom wing joining a flat-roofed living-dining-kitchen area centered on a large masonry fireplace." Alongside prefabrication managed by Erdman's company, the architect sourced off-the-rack Andersen windows and Pella doors and used basic materials like plywood and Masonite to cut costs. The tearoom, reached by breezeways on either side, provides a transition from the main house to the pavilion, which measures 1,800 square feet. “The pavilion has a distinctive Japanese flair to it, like the original house,” says Parco.

Counter and sink (€6,800), mirror (€680)

A modern interpretation of the traditional dogtrot home, Camp Baird comprises two cabins placed along an L-shaped orientation. An elongated, solar-heated lap pool runs the length of the south-facing side, alongside an expansive ipe deck that measures nearly 1,600 square feet.

The versatile pickup will measure 78 inches wide with an overall length of 184 inches, and it’s designed to have a payload capacity of 1,800 pounds. The vehicle’s towing capacity and other specifications will be revealed closer to production.

In the living room, the painting is by Geoff McFetridge and the wood paneling is original to the house. “Jewel-y color and simple shapes—they feel right in this house,” says interior designer Jessica Helgerson.

Ying Chang's Grid System desk sports a plethora of wire cages that function as easy-to-see storage cubbies.

At 16,700 square feet, the home is a lot to behold—but the streamlined palette makes it easier to take it all in.

The glass-and-steel Taghkanic House is set far back from Old Route 82, making it invisible from the street. The main pavilion—which is only a section of the full structure—is about 1,800 square feet and looks out to incredible views of the Catskill Mountains.

Matte-black Tolix chairs surround a 14-foot harvest dining table that dates back to the 1800s.

At 1,800 square feet over two floors (or 2,400 square feet if the third floor is finished), the Great Diamond is efficient in its layout: the ground floor has a living room and an open-plan living and dining area and a powder room, while the second floor has three bedrooms and two full baths.

The home's dynamic form shapes various outdoor spaces within a tight footprint. Here, a concrete patio serves as an outdoor grilling/dining space and incorporates storage for the Rais wood-burning stove inside. Salvaged stone from the site is incorporated into 1,800 feet of outdoor decorative and retaining walls.

In the kitchen, custom walnut cabinetry and Caesarstone counters are paired with Bertoia stools and Ikea pendant lamps.

Built in the late 1800s across Australia, Victorian terrace houses feature cast-iron ornamentation, an inexpensive way of decorating the exteriors.

In the living room, an 18th century jajim, purchased in Istanbul, hangs behind a Molteni & C sofa covered in woven linen with mohair pillows. The wool rug is from California Carpets.

Shanghai-based Zhoujie Zhang graduated from the Central St. Martins in 2010 and returns to London with a series of faceted chairs cut and folded from a single sheet of mirror-finished steel. Zhang scanned friends’ bodies and then translated these bespoke dimensions into made-to-measure furniture in the computer. His inspiration came from an interest in Taoism and its emphasis on actionlessness and non-interference in nature. “I tried to apply this to the digital world,” he explains, “and let the objects generate themselves.”
