The final stop on the tour will take us to the magnificent Jewel Box, a modern tropical residence also designed by Architects Magnus in San Diego’s Pacific Beach community. The homeowners’ main wish was for the house to become their personal paradise. The Magnus duo made their dream come true by creating a handcrafted mahogany screen façade that provides privacy without blocking the views of the bay and foothills. Additionally, a two-story lanai creates a covered area for outdoor living.

This award-winning home by New York–based West Chin Architects is situated on a narrow corner lot in a Long Island neighborhood. The cedar-clad residence features a garage-style glass door that opens to welcome the salty sea breeze from the neighboring beach.

The house is made up of low-maintenance elements and materials including exposed plaster, a metal roof, and marine-grade metal columns. In this image, you can see the open area underneath the lanai and how the wood screen ensures the residents have privacy without sacrificing their views.

The board-formed concrete retaining wall holds firewood and is also a bench. Beyond, the garden lounge backs up against the studio and a retaining wall. “It’s a study in how little you can do to define a space,” Thomas says.

The result is a “frozen lava texture, which contrasts with the inside of the bowl that we polish to an almost mirror finish,” says Arbel. “This is the first series of objects that has very little function. Mostly they exist for some sort of emotional response.”

A new cedar and glass dining pavilion extends through the back of a weekend retreat in rural Ontario designed by architect Brian O'Brian for Ben Sykes and Erin Connor.
