The Flying Nest's current incarnation is called Avoriaz 1800—a reference to the hotel's location at 1,800 meters above sea level.

The architectural lines of oceanfront Sea Ranch Abalone Bay, one of about 1,800 buildings at Sea Ranch, lean with the offshore breezes. The home's material and color palette are harmonic with nature.

"Since we're completely off grid we operate off of hauled water, so we have three 1,800 gallon tanks that get filled up every other week. But for those same reasons, people off the grid don't really have pools because they're hard to maintain, but we did it anyway."

Another house built from Wright's Prefab #1 plan for Marshall Erdman & Associates, the Socrates Zaferiou House in New York state, was sold in 2014. The Prefab #1 layouts, which ranged in size from 1,800 to 2,400 square feet, shared a single story, L-shaped plan with a "pitched-roof bedroom wing joining a flat-roofed living-dining-kitchen area centered on a large masonry fireplace." Encompassing 1,800 square-feet with 10 foot ceilings, the residence’s main living area features large windows that give way to breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean.

The tearoom, reached by breezeways on either side, provides a transition from the main house to the pavilion, which measures 1,800 square feet. “The pavilion has a distinctive Japanese flair to it, like the original house,” says Parco.

A modern interpretation of the traditional dogtrot home, Camp Baird comprises two cabins placed along an L-shaped orientation. An elongated, solar-heated lap pool runs the length of the south-facing side, alongside an expansive ipe deck that measures nearly 1,600 square feet.

The versatile pickup will measure 78 inches wide with an overall length of 184 inches, and it’s designed to have a payload capacity of 1,800 pounds. The vehicle’s towing capacity and other specifications will be revealed closer to production.

At 16,700 square feet, the home is a lot to behold—but the streamlined palette makes it easier to take it all in.

The glass-and-steel Taghkanic House is set far back from Old Route 82, making it invisible from the street. The main pavilion—which is only a section of the full structure—is about 1,800 square feet and looks out to incredible views of the Catskill Mountains.

At 1,800 square feet over two floors (or 2,400 square feet if the third floor is finished), the Great Diamond is efficient in its layout: the ground floor has a living room and an open-plan living and dining area and a powder room, while the second floor has three bedrooms and two full baths.

Matte-black Tolix chairs surround a 14-foot harvest dining table that dates back to the 1800s.

The home's dynamic form shapes various outdoor spaces within a tight footprint. Here, a concrete patio serves as an outdoor grilling/dining space and incorporates storage for the Rais wood-burning stove inside. Salvaged stone from the site is incorporated into 1,800 feet of outdoor decorative and retaining walls.

Built in the late 1800s across Australia, Victorian terrace houses feature cast-iron ornamentation, an inexpensive way of decorating the exteriors.

The facade of the 1800s-built home was preserved while the interiors saw a svelte update. An addition at the rear hides an immaculate listening room built and tuned to the client's audio equipment.

Chandler City Hall; Chandler, Arizona SmithGroupJJR Considering the environment and Chandler citizens, the team at SmithGroupJJR focused on designing a community courtyard. The courtyard is filled with desert plants and permeable ground cover, both of which reconnect the town with its rural heritage and promote water conservation. Additionally, the west side of the building features a “Turbulent Shade:” a hinged structure with 1,800 perforated stainless steel panels to protect the building from the sun.

When Justin Sullivan and Christine Ju stumbled upon this house in Cleveland Park neighborhood of Washington, DC, it was in clear need of an update. "It only had one bathroom, a kitchen that hadn't been touched since the 60s, and a small backyard that had become overgrown with weeds and had a rusty chain link fence," Sullivan says. It was originally 1,800 square feet, but the couple expanded it to 2,400 with the addition of a basement.

The resawn oak flooring comes from structural beams salvaged from a barn in Ohio’s Allegheny Mountains that dated back to the 1800s. The doors were salvaged from a mansion in Greenwich, Connecticut.

"The central pavilion evolved as a place to house a lot of the functions of the home, and also gave us a structure to build porches and decks for further protection from the sun," says Dominick. The outdoor patio is 1,600 square feet.

"This is the Beauvoir House, located in Las Flores Canyon in Malibu," says Bruce Bolander. "The color was influenced by the color of the new growth on the chaparral that surrounds the house. The house and kitchen are both very small; the house is about 1600 square feet."

The eight container apartments, huddled together in a wise use of the space, are situated on an old used car lot in downtown Phoenix. A decommissioned container costs between $1,800 and $5,000, says architect Wesley James. Transportation, handling, and site assembly run at least as much.

In Sweden, architect Bengt Mattias Carlsson created a pavilion adjacent to a residence dating from the late 1800s. The pergola is made from glue-laminated timber beams set atop steel posts; it protects the pool from falling pine needles. George Nelson benches offer places to sit.

"A big part of the reason I sought out the apartment we live in now was due to its amazing bones and architectural details," says Amanda. "The 12-foot ceilings, French doors, and fireplaces that date back to the late 1800s feel like a little dose of Paris in Charleston."

This thatch-roofed brick cottage in Nieby, Germany, was originally built by tenant farmers or crofters from a nearby estate in the late 1800s. It stands on a small triangular plot of land surrounded by barley fields and faces toward the Geltinger Birk nature reserve. The home’s street-facing facade was preserved and restored with only a minimal, black-steel dormer window belying the more substantial alterations which open onto the private rear yard. A subtle black-framed addition containing an oak-lined living space is tucked under the thatched roof and opens onto a sunken timber terrace while large picture windows are cut into the historic brick volume in areas which had been damaged from the previous additions.

The three townhouses, named the Shake Shacks, range in size from 1,400 to 1,600 square feet. Each has two bedrooms, one bath, and a flexible space at the ground floor which can be rented out or used as a home office. The gable roof shields a protected deck on one side, and a solar panel array on the other.

Epic Sail To reduce heat load and provide shade, DeSalvo initially tracked down a sail system from Sun Shade Australia. But the $6,000 price tag had the architect and contractor designing their own version out of Mermet solar screen fabric. It was fabricated by Covers Unlimited for $1,800. coversunlimitedinc.com

The kitchen cost roughly totaled $16,000.

Though the works on paper are not considered studies for Bertoia's furniture designs, some of the patterns and forms that emerged are echoed in his furniture and sculptures. The exhibited works were produced over the course of four decades, from 1940 to 1970, which spans a healthy portion of his career. "They were created during a time in which he began designing ground-breaking furniture and public artwork," says Murphy.
