Actor Jason Statham Bids Adieu to His Hollywood Midcentury Home for $7M

Reimagined by Standard Architects and interior designer Courtney Applebaum, the sleek and minimalist home makes the most of its classic butterfly roof.

Jason Statham—best known for his roles in action movies such as the Fast and the Furious and The Transporter franchises—is also quite a fan of midcentury real estate. Having previously restored several properties in the greater Los Angeles area, the English actor couldn't pass up the opportunity to purchase a long-admired but run-down structure across the street from his first home in the city. An alluring butterfly roof provided a simple canvas for Statham and his go-to architect, Jeff Allsbrook of Standard Architecture, to reimagine the 1957 abode for a life in the twenty-first century.

An original butterfly roof defines the midcentury structure, which is sited on a winding street above the Sunset Strip in Hollywood. Standard Architecture retained this core geometric feature, adding cedar siding underneath overhangs and white edges to emphasize the lines.

Inside, the butterfly roof marks much of the interior as well, with ceilings clad in the same cedar siding. A fireplace originally divided what is now one large, open great room complete with expansive sliding glass doors that overlook a patio and pool.

Statham discussed the renovation process in a recent interview with Architectural Digest: "I’m always looking for places to either renovate or to buy," he said. "This one sort of came out of the blue and had a certain charm. It was quite downtrodden and had been neglected, as most of these of midcenturies have been." Along with Standard Architects, Statham hired interior designer Courtney Applebaum to outfit the interior. "My lean is towards Danish furniture," Statham adds. "So this is slightly different. Applebaum was so great at placing a few bits and keeping it all nice and minimal."

Clerestory windows mark overhanging sections of the roof while emphasizing its butterfly shape. The dining area flows into a new kitchen, which features new lacquered cabinetry and an inset area for the cooktop. A door to the left provides access to the carport.

Statham, who lives in Beverly Hills with his partner, the model and actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, primarily used the property as a spot for family to crash when visiting from overseas.
