Trained first in Japan then at the prestigious Royal College of Art in London (alma mater to Jasper Morrison, among others), the Azumis established their design studio in 1995. In the short time since, they have won numerous awards for their designs, including "Product of the Year" at the International Interior Design Awards in 2000 for the LEM Piston Stool. The stool's simple form belies a sophisticated understanding of materials and technology, enabling intuitive use of an original seating. This same unique perspective also produced the "Table=Chest", an apparently simple piece of wood furniture that tranforms from a low table to a chest of drawers in a few turns. Indicative of the future of international design, the work of AZUMI Studio is in numerous design collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum.

  • Tania da Cruz
    @taniadacruz
    Milan-based Tania da Cruz cut her teeth in Marcel Wanders’s Amsterdam studio. “It was like living in a temporary fairy tale,” she says. Dutch whimsy factored into her early work—such as her Chia Pet-like Wig vase—but Cruz found acclaim with her modular Braque sound absorber made from cork. The practical and aesthetically adventurous piece earned a coveted first prize at the SaloneSatellite awards in 2013. Working with cork—like for the two-piece Bole stools—holds a special significance for Cruz, whose native Portugal produces about half the world’s supply. “I love that, as a designer, I am indirectly helping the economy to show the world its amazing potential,” she says.

  • Double Butter
    @double_butter
    DoubleButter is the furniture design and manufacturing company of David Larabee and Dexter Thornton. We’re based in Denver, Colorado. Our products are made entirely in Denver and can be ordered directly from this site or by calling us (303-246-5759). We try to keep all pieces in our production line in stock and usually ship within 10 days of receiving an order. Shipping costs to any destination in the continental US will be displayed in the checkout process. Delivery in the Denver metro area is free. Call for shipping rates to other destinations. Pieces in our back catalog are made to order and will ship within 8-10 weeks. All pieces in our back catalog can be customized to meet specific needs. Call or e-mail us to talk through a custom order request. ABOUT THE MATERIALSOur production case goods and dining tables are available in either solid American black walnut or in forming plywood. The black walnut is always domestically sourced. The insides of our solid walnut pieces are finished with natural shellac and the outsides with a natural linseed oil and pine-resin varnish blend. The forming plywood is a typical spruce/pine/fir plywood with a classic-looking edge. The faces of the plywood are coated with a phenolic resin (like Richlite countertops) that is extremely water resistant. The plywood is normally used and re-used to make concrete forms, hence the name and the hardy coating. We get it from a forming-supply yard down the street from our shop. That company’s logo is printed on one side of each sheet and for standard orders we orient the sheets so the logo is on the inside or underside of the piece. However, on request we’ll flip it and face the logo out. Just call and ask. Our drawer boxes are made from BBB birch plywood, finished with natural shellac. The Roadrunner side chair in wood is available in either solid walnut finished with the oil and varnish blend or in medium density fiberboard (MDF) finished the same way. The aluminum pulls and steel legs of our case goods and our line of steel chairs, benches and stools are powder-coated, a zero-VOC process that is hard wearing and water resistant. We offer 4 standard colors: blue (RAL 6034), green (RAL 6019), cream (RAL 1013) and gray (RAL 7043). Our line of powder-coated steel seating is uphostered with either brown or black cowhide. The upholstery is affixed with velcro and is thus removable and interchangeable.
  • Alexis Georgacopoulos
    @alexis_georgacopoulos
    Born in Athens, Alexis Georgacopoulos lives and works in Lausanne, where he practices in his own design studio and acts as the director at ECAL. From September 2000 until December 2008 he was the head of the industrial design department at ECAL. He initiated the participation of the department in important international fairs (Milan 2001 to 2007, Cologne 2004 to 2006) and set up international exhibitions (Milking Stool, Conductor’s Baton, The Festive Kitchen). He also fostered the collaboration with major producers such as B&B Italia, Serralunga, Ligne Roset, Team by Wellis, Boffi, Christofle, Swarovski or Nestlé. During this period, the industrial design Department of the ECAL became one of the most acclaimed and influential in design education worldwide. In his own practice, Alexis Georgacopoulos’ designs are both functional and minimal, usually with humor as the counterweight to technology. He works in the fields of product design, furniture and exhibition design. He keeps his works conceptually “light” and goes to the essential while keeping the balance between function and emotion. His projects ¬edited or in prototype¬ have been exhibited in major cities, design fairs or museums such as the Milan Furniture Fair, the London Design Museum and the Shanghai MOCA and have been published in various exhibition catalogues and books such as the “&FORK” book edited by Phaidon Press in 2007. In 2006, he received the prestigious Leenaards Foundation Cultural Grant and in early 2008 he spent 4 months in Hong Kong and has been developing new projects in product and interior design for various international clients. ‘Pleasure, play and classicism’: this could be Alexis Georgacopoulos’s credo that combines conceptual lightness with simple functions and straight to the point effectiveness.
  • T.W.A.K.
    @t_w_a_k_
    In the heart of Mozambique you will find a forestry concession, where wood debris is being turned into recycled, uniquely beautiful pieces of furniture and home accessories, like stools, vases, platters and huge slabs of wood, that can be transformed into beautiful table tops. Trees with a Conscience brings you this “forest debris” project, supplying the décor market with these quirky pieces of art. Most of the wood comes from debris off cuts, found at the sawmill, logs that were in fires, poaching or have been felled in a controlled reforestation program. The forest concession situated in the Zambezi valley, goes through a vigorous annual audit, by a forest council which is a nonprofit organization that monitors the forests of the world, assuring consumers that the source of their wood is sustainable. What makes our wood TWAK? We work with an accredited certified forest, concession in Mozambique. The sawmill goes through an annual audit that makes sure the forestry management is sustainable and responsible. This includes managing the forest and the people working in and near the forest. What do we strive to achieve? To educate people in the origins of wood. Where does the wood for that piece of furniture come from? The manufacturer should only use timber that has been given a cutting license and is FSC certified. What is FSC? Forest stewardship Council (FSC) is a non profit organisation that was established in 1993. Why? To fight global deforestation. FSC is regarded as the “gold standard” of sustainable forestry. What makes TWAK special? For every tree this is cut down for commercial sale, 4 trees are planted in its place. Minimum impact is used during felling and the extraction phase. We work in a 25 year rotation block that allows the forest to re-grow naturally. Some of our slabs come from trees that have fallen over and died naturally, or have been cut down by honey poachers. Over 1000 hives have been put up in the forests of Mozambique to combat honey poaching. This encourages locals to harves from these beehives rather than to raid them. Our own herbarium ... We have a herbarium run by Megs Coates Palgrave (Trees of Southern Africa). A record is kept of tree species for future generations. Dendrologists (tree doctors) often visit the sawmills. They use their findings to further the fight against global deforestation. What are YOU doing? When you buy TWAK timber slabs, you are helping save our trees. Together we can encourage correct forest management and protect our future. Supplied by a Certified Substainable Forest.
