  • Design Crush
    @designcrush
    designcrushblog.com I’ve loved art and design for as long as I can remember. (Seriously.) Since making the move from the world of advertising to design (and the 6 states in between), my day-to-day life plays out as author of Design Crush, freelance graphic designer, and creative consultant. What began in June 2007 as a place to catalogue design inspiration for my day job quickly grew into a design crush of massive proportions. I keep every post short and sweet, showing off anything and everything I’m inspired by. Never anything I’m not. When undistracted by great art and design, I can be found making a mess in the kitchen, hanging out in dive bars and stalking professional mascots. I share my Pittsburgh home with three laid-back cats and two mischievous dogs.

  • Kristalia
    @kristalia
    Kristalia was founded in 1994 by young local entrepreneurs joined by two common passions: design and jazz. Right from the very start, Kristalia paid special attention to innovative projects, by means of experimentation and the continuing search for new technical solutions, using materials which they adapted from the fields of fashion and sports. In the autumn of 1995, Kristalia presented its first catalogue to the commercial network. The intended target for the first products was a middle-aged consumer, oriented towards contemporary furnishing, in the upper-middle economic range and with the need to find reassuring tastes and details, bound to tradition, in the things he or she purchases. Starting from the end of the 90's, with the creation of a definitive company organization, the desire arose to pursue a new path, and to go after customers who were not necessarily bound to tradition, offering a product with aesthetic and qualitative characteristics especially close to contemporary Italian design. Today, the Kristalia collection offers items that stand out because of the essential character, the ease of placement, and which take into account a younger age group, in line with the current needs of daily living.
  • Thelermont Hupton
    @thelermont_hupton
    Since the studio’s formation in 2004, Thelermont Hupton’s products and furniture have become recognisable through their willingness to reflect social conventions and peculiarities, and their strong visual identity and sometimes surprising functionality. The products are ingrained with the mark of well considered, bold and inevitably lively design. Both Thelermont and Hupton arrived in the design world via the route of cabinet making and furniture design. They continue to celebrate this medium and build upon their catalogue of projects and products within this field. The emphasis of the furniture design process remains firmly on creating and maintaining a strong visual presence while accommodating the essentials of comfort and functionality demanded by both the domestic and contract market. At the same time, they have discovered that product design provides a route through which to convey and express their visual commentary in objects. This satisfies their urge to reflect influences that do not initially appear to have their roots founded in design with thoughtful, challenging and useful pieces that are capable of winning acclaim and sales within the critical and serious retail marketplace. Their products are now stocked worldwide. Thelermont Hupton offer distinct product and furniture ranges and a bespoke service.

    Born in Athens, Alexis Georgacopoulos lives and works in Lausanne, where he practices in his own design studio and acts as the director at ECAL. From September 2000 until December 2008 he was the head of the industrial design department at ECAL. He initiated the participation of the department in important international fairs (Milan 2001 to 2007, Cologne 2004 to 2006) and set up international exhibitions (Milking Stool, Conductor’s Baton, The Festive Kitchen). He also fostered the collaboration with major producers such as B&B Italia, Serralunga, Ligne Roset, Team by Wellis, Boffi, Christofle, Swarovski or Nestlé. During this period, the industrial design Department of the ECAL became one of the most acclaimed and influential in design education worldwide. In his own practice, Alexis Georgacopoulos’ designs are both functional and minimal, usually with humor as the counterweight to technology. He works in the fields of product design, furniture and exhibition design. He keeps his works conceptually “light” and goes to the essential while keeping the balance between function and emotion. His projects ¬edited or in prototype¬ have been exhibited in major cities, design fairs or museums such as the Milan Furniture Fair, the London Design Museum and the Shanghai MOCA and have been published in various exhibition catalogues and books such as the “&FORK” book edited by Phaidon Press in 2007. In 2006, he received the prestigious Leenaards Foundation Cultural Grant and in early 2008 he spent 4 months in Hong Kong and has been developing new projects in product and interior design for various international clients. ‘Pleasure, play and classicism’: this could be Alexis Georgacopoulos’s credo that combines conceptual lightness with simple functions and straight to the point effectiveness.

  • Wild & Wolf
    @wild_wolf
    Wild and Wolf came about because of an overwhelming desire to design and create beautiful, exciting, original and of course Pretty and Useful things. So we started out with the Pretty Useful Tools range back in 2005 and haven't looked back since. Hopefully since then we have managed to put together a collection of products which fulfills all of this and maybe more? We're certainly going to keep trying. We seem to be getting something right as our products have won a handful of awards starting off with the UK Gift of the Year in 2006 for the Pretty Useful Tools range, then in 2007 and 2008 for the V&A tools for the home and garden, and most recently we've made it to the finals of the UK Licensing Awards, again with the V&A Tools, winners to be announced in September, so fingers crossed! We might be entering a few US competitions in 2009 so will keep you posted as to how we get on. It's been a busy 3 years and finally we think we've just about got our website up to date, but hopefully not for long as we've got some great new products planned for later this year, and even more for 2009. Don't worry we'll do our best to keep you posted and our sales team are always at the end of the phone to keep you up to date with new products and plus we're exhibiting at trade shows all around the US so you'll be able to see our range there. Meanwhile have a browse through the website as we're sure something will take your fancy. The V&A licensed range of tools has been fantastically successful in the UK and hopefully will be as big a hit with you guys too! We’ve taken everyday tools and covered them in William Morris prints from the Victoria and Albert Museum’s archive and made hammers and screwdrivers very pretty indeed. Oh they’re also super useful too! We've also got another new licensed range of soccer inspired men’s gifts based on the fabulous Charles Buchan's Football Monthly magazines from the 1950s. This was Britain’s first and biggest selling soccer magazine so is a bit of a nostalgia trip for us but also a great looking range of products all geared up for men, all over the world! So we feel confident that even you baseball fans out there will love these terrific products. Another best seller is the Old School Badges range. Some are based on traditional school badges like Head Boy and Head Girl and well… some are a little more cheeky or celebrate a special occasion, so great if you’re getting married or happen to be really good at dancing … ahem! Take a look and you’ll see what we mean! We’ve got a new range of Pretty Useful Tools coming out in November. This latest design is “Annie” which is fun and stylish in this super cute print. They do seem too pretty to use, but believe us when we say they really, really are very useful. Back off boys these tools are too pink for you! Have a look at the complete ranges online or you can download our current US catalogue by clicking here
  • Riedel
    @riedel
    The story begins in 1756 in Bohemia and continues right down to the united Europe of today, taking in on the way some of the most dramatic events in European history. The Riedel family has been in the glass business for 300 years, with 11 generations keeping the family business intact. The story begins in 1678 in the northern part of Bohemia, bordering Schlesia - today the Czech republic and Poland respectively. This part of Bohemia was a German speaking enclave known as the Sudetenland. The Venetians brought back the knowledge of glass making from the Near East around 1.000 A.D. The knowledge of producing glass spread slowly towards the northern part of Europe, searching for energy, critical to the melting of glass. Wood was the source, causing a glassmaker migration to the forests. Due to this migration, a glass culture developed in Bohemia in the 17th century. After being a prison during WWII, Claus Reidel returned to his village. The head of the local glassworks, Swarovski, had heard that there was a Riedel in town and asked to see him. Swarovski had been taught the art of glass making by Claus's great grandfather Josef, and took Claus under his wing like a son, even sending him to university to study chemistry. Claus Riedel, now married to Italian Adia, whom he had met in Italy during the war, moved around doing various jobs between 1951 and 1956, ending up in Innsbruck, Austria. This was around the time that the Swarovskis were approached to take over a glass works in the small town of Kufstein near Innsbruck in Austria, but they declined as the production of stemware did not fit their profile. Claus had no capital to buy the works, but the Swarovskis advanced him the money, and Claus took over the bankrupt Tiroler Glashütte, today's Riedel factory. After a period of readjustment, Walter threw himself into the new business with his son, but they had quite different ideas in terms of priorities - Claus was very keen on the production of stemware and Walter preferred high output items. This led to an inevitable The Riedel glassworks had a brand new direction - unadorned, delicate, fine wine glasses. In his 1961 catalogue, Claus Riedel displayed for the first time his vision of glasses specially made to enhance specific styles of wine, distinguishing the Riedel company more than ever before, as to date fashion in stemware had been dictated purely by aesthetics, not function. The handmade Sommeliers series was launched in 1973, introducing the revolutionary new concept to the wine trade and changing the world of wineglasses forever. In his research into how the shape of a glass affects the wine inside, Claus discovered one major factor - that virtually every glass people drank wine from was too small to do justice to the wine. The Sommeliers Series was showered with prizes from around the world. Georg Riedel, tenth generation, further developed Claus's theories, producing grape-specific glasses, and mechanizing the production of fine wine glasses with his Vinum series, making Riedel glasses far more affordable to wine lovers the world over. A milestone in the modern Riedel company is the founding of a Riedel company in the United States, which came about following an encounter between Robert Mondavi and Georg Riedel, showing real commitment to the US market. While Claus was a talented designer, as recognised by the National Olympic Committee when they commissioned him to design and produce vases for the 1968 Olympic Games, his son Georg brought a calming, analytical eye to the business, soon spotting weaknesses in the corporate structure. As Georg took over more and more of the strategy for the business, Claus gradually became less involved, until Georg took the helm of the company in 1987, where he remains to this day.
