Alpine Modern is a design and lifestyle brand based in Boulder, Colorado. Our story begins in 2013, when we opened the Alpine Modern Shop in downtown Boulder. From there, we dreamed big and created a beautiful quarterly print magazine about architecture, design and elevated living in the mountains around the world. Alpine Modern Issue 01 launched in November of 2014. We opened our first Alpine Modern Café in Boulder in August 2015 with the desire to create a physical space for the community to gather for a new elevated experience. Today, you can also shop thoughtfully curated products from known modern design brands as well as small maker labels at our Alpine Modern online shop at https://www.alpinemodern.com.
Building on the love we received from readers of our printed magazine, we launched Alpine Modern Editorial (alpinemodern.com/editorial) this spring, where we continue to publish "slow content" about incredible cabins and splendid mountain homes, interviews with architects and designers, portraits of makers in the mountains, and musings on walks in the woods and alpine cooking ingredients.
We are sharing with you a selection of Alpine Modern stories and Curations here at Dwell.com.
Say hello to Alpine Modern via firstname.lastname@example.org or talk to us on social media, where you find us under @alpinemodern.

Ben Farrell, owner and principal architect, is a graduate of Syracuse University but attributes most of his formative experiences to time spent in Florence, Italy and Copenhagen, Denmark. His curiosity with architecture came at a young age in Copenhagen by spray painting graffiti on the drab and boring ends of buildings that seemed otherwise forgotten. He legitimized this passion for unauthorized aesthetic improvement with an architectural education, some of which was spent studying the classics in the architecturally fecund areas of Tuscany. These contrasting experiences spawned an equally contentious philosophy that continues to juxtapose the respect of classical order with a modernity that says "nothing is sacred", improvement happens everywhere and sometimes the rules are just wrong. He resides in Southern Marin with a studio in Sausalito.

Prentiss Wickline Architects and Balance Associates Architects have combined. At the core of both firms is the pursuit of balance: between natural and built environments, between a client’s vision and real world parameters, between beauty and utility. Working together, we offer a richer and broader practice, continuing the highly personalized experience that both our prior firms have come to be known for. We are proud of our expanded knowledge base and network, and ultimately, we believe PBW will enable us to bring new insights and better solutions to our clients and the world of design.
We design with the belief that nothing is impossible, and temper it with good old-fashioned pragmatism, embracing both big ideas and intricate details. Taking into account location, context, and other inherent attributes of a specific project, we strive to create a balanced whole, integrating the structure and the environment. We consider the interplay between inside and outside, light and shadow, aesthetics and utility, carefully selecting materials that harmonize with nature, prioritizing efficiency and sustainability. Most importantly, we look for opportunities to bring joy and unanticipated delight into the spaces we create as well as into the process that gets us there. This should be fun— after all, we are building dreams.
