Mostly we were moved by the work of art itself -- a sculpture made from wood which day or night brought joy to all who saw it.

As an undergraduate, he studied architecture at Auburn University (Alabama Polytechnic at that time), then completed a graduate degree at Harvard, where Walter Gropius was his professor.
