Modernism Show

The 2011 Modernism Show, held in the cavernous Barker Hangar at Santa Monica Airport, brought both rarities and new interpretations within the category. From works by Gio Ponti and the Lalannes to new pieces by emerging artists created over the last 10 years, the stock again exemplified the dealers’ ability to constantly renew the parameters of modernism.

Downtown displayed a cache of circa 1956 chairs by Pierre Jeanneret, Le Corbusier’s less-famous cousin, made for the planned city of Chandigarh, to which both architects contributed greatly. These handmade chairs were found in a trash pile in India, nearly destroyed.

Front and center at Dragonette was one of an edition of eight Hosta chairs by Claude Lalanne, named for the plant and cast in 2000. A copper wash over the bronze already shows a good patina.

The focal point at Dallas-based Sally Rosen 20th Century Collections was a leather-topped Alessandro Mendini/Zanotta “Macaone” table from 1985, 1969 Tobia Scarpa cowhide chairs, ceramics by Francois-Xavier Lalanne (left; circa 1980s) and Clyde Burt (circa 1950s), backed by a circa 1965 orange mirror.
