Ashley Goldman, the voice behind the design blog The Gold Hive, and her husband Ross Goldman have been restoring her 1915 craftsman bungalow in San Diego, California, for the past three years.

Room by room, they are transforming their home into a polished blend of craftsman character and modern pieces. This master bedroom renovation is the third remodel in their home inspired by an online design challenge. The One Room Challenge is a biannual event in which 20 design influencers are selected to transform a space in just six weeks and document the steps along the way.

To transform the master bedroom, the couple focused on re-configuring the layout to gain better functionality, while filling the space with a curated collection of furnishings and accessories. To begin, the door between the bedroom and kitchen was removed, adding additional wall space. The bed was re-oriented centrally in the space underneath the window.

Along with the reconfiguration, all new bedding, furniture, light fixtures, window treatments, a rug, paint, and art combine to create a knockout transformation. To add interest to the walls, board and batten, which closely mimics the 100-year-old room dividers in the home's dining room, was installed on all of the walls. The wood detailing and Farrow & Ball's Mole's Breath painted walls complement the room's true craftsman stature. Matte paint finishes add a rich, velvety look.

One doorway may have been removed, but another custom wood door from Pella was installed to provide direct access onto an outdoor patio. Painted Off-Black by Farrow & Ball, the door includes custom molding patterns that align with the original doors in the home. Modern yet classic hardware in a matte black finish from Emtek is the perfect hardware solution.

In addition to the bedroom, the couple transformed the backyard to create the ideal space to enjoy the San Diego sunshine. Some gardening, paint, furniture, and a few accessories completely transform the backyard from an overgrown landscape into a stylish garden lounge.
