ITHACA, NEW YORK - AUGUST 28: A local resident and farm co-op member weighs freshly harvested vegetables on August 28, 2007 at EcoVillage at Ithaca "EVI" in Ithaca, New York. Local residents purchase shares in the farm's summer and fall harvest. EcoVillage is situated on a 175-acre site with two 30-home cohousing neighborhoods, an organic 10-acre Community Service Agriculture farm, a 5-acre organic berry farm and plans to launch an alternative education program based on a sustainability curriculum. EVI is an example of a small-scale settlement, either in the country or in cities, designed to minimize impact on Earth. The Global Ecovillage Network lists 379 such communities around the world. As concern about global warming heats up, interest in ecovillage life is shifting into the mainstream. Most of them are built around the idea of environmental sustainability. Even though EVI is still on the electrical grid and many residents commute by car, the community has an ecological footprint 40% less than a comparable mainstream community.
