The truth is, Rose Ballard was joking when she sent a Craigslist ad for a 1971 Airstream to her husband, Paul Suttles.

“We’d just gotten married, and we were thinking about our next step and how to transition out of renting in the volatile housing market in Austin,” says the interior designer, principal of Rose Ballard Studio. “I happened upon a trailer listing and sent it to Paul, half-kidding.”

But joshing around small-space living is a dangerous game when you’re married to an architect. Paul called her bluff, and days later, the newlyweds were the owners of a tarnished silver camper shell.

The trailer would eventually be polished up inside and out and christened the Silver Armadillo, but when it came into Rose and Paul’s lives, it was in rough shape—and the couple didn’t even have anywhere to put it. “We just said we’d figure it out—and we did,” says Rose. They had the ’Dillo towed to a “junky, rugged,” empty lot outside of Austin and trekked back and forth from their rental apartment for months to tinker away.

Yes, it was a slog, as all renovations are. But the low environmental footprint and minimal financial commitment made the project more than worthwhile for the pair: It was a way to be close to downtown Austin without spending every last dollar on a down payment. The design challenge, too, was deeply attractive. “We thought this would be an interesting way to design our first home,” says Rose. “It was appealing to create a very intentional space where you can really think about every nook.”

Rose and Paul were uniquely prepared to tackle the project: As contributors to Austin charity Community First!, which designs and builds tiny homes for unhoused community members, they both had years of experience crafting efficient, enjoyable small spaces. Still, Paul estimates they went through more than 30 floor plans trying to find just the right layout. “You have to be able to live in a tiny space,” he says.

The final plan places the living space at the front, which Paul winkingly breaks down into “the library, the living room, and the foyer.” The sofa faces the window, next to a wraparound counter that frames the view. “We both strongly agreed we didn’t want a banquette: We wanted it to feel like a home and to not have to just look right down at the rest of the trailer,” notes Paul. The kitchen pantry acts as a divider, visually separating the bedroom—and a surprisingly un-cramped bathroom—from the rest of the space.

The goal wasn’t just to fit all the components of a full-size home into the minimal square footage—it was to build an environment that was warm, welcoming, and inviting. “We were sensitive to the fact that it’s a 1971 Airstream—if we put shining, bright new things in here, they would feel out of place,” says Rose. And so, salvaged wood beams from a century-old wood house were hand-milled and laid down as floor boards; more vintage wood was rescued from a tear-down 1930s bungalow and installed as the headboard.

Living small starts with “being honest with yourself about what you really need,” advises Rose. “Think through every little use, down to where your Kleenex is going to go.” Creating smart storage for what you do need is the other critical piece. In the Silver Armadillo, the bed lifts up to reveal a large storage space, and cabinetry is integrated into the wall along the front.

Once place you’ll find less storage than average, however, is the kitchen. “We didn’t build upper cabinets,” explains Rose. “We compromised storage for quality of living—we wanted it to feel larger, and allow more light to bounce around.”

Their strategy worked: What once was literally a shell is now full of light, air, and—importantly—calm. And when they were almost finished with their renovations, they lucked out and found a piece of land to rent just outside of Austin’s downtown core. The project might have started out as a flight of fancy, but with Rose and Paul’s deft touch, it’s now a place to call home in a city that almost priced them out.

And it’s not just the homeowners who think this is a special place: When one of Rose’s former design school professors was passing through town recently, he paid a visit to the newly finished trailer and dropped a compliment Rose can’t get out of her head. “He said, ‘you walk in and breathe a sigh of relief,’” she says. “It was kind of a dream moment.”
