SYA's work has been widely recognized for design excellence. The City of New York has twice selected the firm for the Mayor's Design and Construction Excellence iniative, a highly prestigious program for new civic projects. The office has also been recognized as an important emerging design firm by the New York chapter of the AIA.

Prior to starting SYA, Stephen Yablon was with the internationally renowned firms I.M. Pei & Partners and Gwathmey Siegel & Associates, where he was responsible for major commericial and institutional projects, like the renovation of the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the new SONY headquarters in the Philip Johnson AT&T Building.
